Take the Money and Run: Manhunt for Couple Who Bolted After $6.1 Million Bank Error
Friday , May 22, 2009

Friends say Leo Gao always dreamed of owning a fish-and-chips shop, and someday living the good life.
But someday came sooner than expected, courtesy of a New Zealand bank error that gave him a $6.1 million line of credit, instead of the $61,000 limit for which he'd applied.
Now, the Korean national and his girlfriend, Cara Young, a New Zealander -- who together ran a gas station in rural Rotorua -- are the focus of an international manhunt after Gao withdrew an estimated $4 million and, together with Young, hit the road.
The young couple, who are in their mid-twenties, told friends they were going on holiday. Their car was found abandoned at Auckland airport and the police believe they have fled to China. Interpol and New Zealand police are focusing their search on Beijing and Hong Kong.
Young's four-year-old daughter, Lena, and Gao's mother and siblings who lived with him in a house near the service station, BP Barnetts, also have disappeared, according to the couple's friends.
Gao always "dreamt of getting rich," a neighbor, Chevi Lambert, told The Times of London.
"He talked to me about his dreams and ventures," Lambert said. "His one big dream was to make money. He bought a fish and chip shop next door to the garage and wanted to make it into a Chinese fish and chip shop. But he didn't do anything about it," Lambert told The Times of London.
"It just sat there empty and after about six months he sold it for less than he bought it for.
"That was around the time when BP started going downhill. He lost motivation; the pressure of working those those long hours left him really stressed," she told The Times of London.
"At the same time he and Cara were having a lot of problems," she added. "They split up about a month ago but they were trying to work things out."
Young's mother, Suzanne Hurring, told local TV news that she could not believe her daughter had stolen the money, describing her as "beautiful and honest."
"This was the crazy thing, she has never pinched a thing in her life. She is so honest," she said. She would like to "wring (Mr Gao's) blimmin' neck," she added.

Funny thing, I'd probably move to New Zealand. It looks like paradise.

I wouldn't want to acquire it in a way that would make me a hunted man.

Now if i suddenly came up with $4M without that string......the first thing I would do is pay off EVERYONE I owe ANYTHING to. That way There would be no hands sticking my way from then on.

After that? I'd probably buy the lots behind and on both sides of my house and then do a massive remodel/add-on project.

With the remainder? Invest some and just go from there with the rest.

I probably do a combo of Duchess and LKT. After my husband and I quit our jobs, and paid of all ou debt, we'd get a big old piece of land, build the simple log cottage husband has always wanted and then invest the rest so we could just sit with our feet up all day and fish, hunt, or just have friends over all the time.

Oh, I'd also get all girly and learn to knit, and do other crafty things. Maybe sell the stuff a craft sales...or just give it all away, hell, I won't need the money.

I don't want strings either, I am allergic to jail.

IF i just say inherited it.. THEN that would be different.

Pay off the house, do some remodeling, buy a new car and the biggest damn television money can buy... OH and lay in as much alcohol as my basement could hold.

OH and screw the charity shit.. they can make their own money.

As long as there are people like you ~ there will be people like me.

You are a selfish bitch to have that attitude.

I would buy a crofters cottage in Scotland, and I would buy my daughter a pony, andpay for the whole family to go on holidayto Japan for a few weeks, I would donate some to the local hospice I volunteer at and give some to the save the children charity.

I would buy myself a new wardrobe and go on a comic book spending spree.

If you were closer, I would GIVE you one...You would be surprised at how amazingly cheap they are to maintain...Keep in mind tho, a pony would take over the top spot in terms of love & affection.

My daughter is a real horse lover, there is a riding school just down the road from where we live and she has had a couple of tries and she loved it. I do intend on buying her some lessons at least, so she has basic riding skills she can use when she gets older.

I do appreciate the offer D.

OP by the time she reaches 4 feet tall she can ride a small horse instead.

I know people in the UK that might hook you up with a free aquisition of a horse or pony. You'd be surprised how many free horses are out there to adopt.

You can also join Lorraine's horse forum and ask around there. They are mostly from the UK there and would know.

Same brain...I was just gettin' ready to tell him that...I really don't think the general population is aware of that.

Oh and to answer the thread -

I'd pay off my house, then put it up for sale and buy one in Florida by the beach. And another large chunk of land for another horse ranch somewhere. Maybe in Maryland.

I'd buy another motorcycle and go across the country on it.

Then I'd travel. Loads of traveling to see all the things and places I've dreamed about.

I'd also be able to donate a giant chunk of change to the two charities I can only afford to give a pittance to each year.

But this money would have to be free and clear - unlike the original story.

No free horses are available EVERYWHERE - I have never had to pay for a pet or a horse. There are so many out there that need homes.
