Yeah, talk about sketchy details. Where was he when he went missing? At home? At a park? ????? How long was he gone before he was reported missing?

Aw. It's hard not to blame the parents when this happens. I know they don't need the blame right now, but until we find out who took that little boy we need someone to blame. Hoping good things for little Sam.

bloody hell.
i can't yet find any photos.
The case of a missing 4-year-old is now being treated as a homicide, the Carlsbad Police Department said.
CARLSBAD, N.M. -- Fire officials said a 4-year-old boy who disappeared after falling into a hole near his Carlsbad home likely perished in the fall.
At about 9:45 a.m. Sunday, the Carlsbad Fire Department said they transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery operation as they continued to dig into the 30-foot-deep hole they believe Samuel Jones fell into.
Carlsbad police said they believe they found Jones about 7 a.m. Sunday, after he disappeared at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Carlsbad Fire Department said they determined the conditions the boy fell into were not survivable.
Firefighters said the hole is about 14 inches in diameter and approximately 30 feet deep. Crews are preparing to dig a trench from the side of the hole and shore up the sides as they go.
Officials said they expect the operation to be a delicate and time-consuming effort.
Fire crews said a local mine rescue team were assisting in the rescue operation.

I hope he is found unharmed, poor boy. Wonder why he is missing his front teeth and who supposedly saw the boy with a bald man? People need to stop letting their kids play outside on their own, I don't care if it's in your backyard, never ever leave your child alone!
ETA: oh no poor baby boy :(

I agree it sounds like he wandered off and fell in, but why is the case being treated as a homicide? And a 30-ft deep hole wasn't covered up?

The boy's mother and father were told of the discovery and were at the scene.
There is no indication of foul play, and police know of no history of child abuse at the home, but detectives are treating the case as a homicide as a precaution, Moyers said.
Samuel lived in the home with his parents and two older siblings, a boy and girl ages 6 and 7, Moyers said. Some young cousins were at the house Saturday when the boy was last seen playing in the yard.
The rural neighborhood is a mix of homes and vacant lots, and a 4-foot chain link separates the boy's home from his neighbor's. It's possible the boy could have climbed the fence and simply fallen into the hole, which was dry and may be deeper than the 30 feet where the body was wedged, Moyers said. There are no curbs or sidewalks in the neighborhood on the city's south side.

CARLSBAD — With a cup of coffee in his hand, Eddy County Fire Coordinator Robert Brader sat back in his chair next to the county's Emergency Preparedness mobile command vehicle Monday morning. His gaze went to the huge mounds of dirt that been dug to free the body of a little boy who fell into a deep hole on Saturday.
It had been a grueling night and early morning as highly experienced people worked together to bring 4-year-old Samuel Jones' body to the surface from 29 feet below the ground. Around 7 a.m., the youngster's lifeless body had been retrieved from the deep hole, and Brader was there.
"It was pretty emotional," said Brader, fatigued from a lack of sleep. He took a moment to compose himself before continuing the interview. "I have been a paramedic for years and have been at accidents involving children. But this was different."
Because no one in Carlsbad or Eddy County had done this type of rescue before, Brader said, specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 was brought in to help. Carlsbad physician Kim Lark and her search and rescue dogs are part of the task force.
Brader said that as soon as the call came in that the child was missing, the mobile command vehicle was brought in to provide logistic support along with generators and heaters.
"Throughout the night people were searching for the little boy. When the sun came up, someone told us there was a hole in the ground that he may have fallen into."
That's when Brader and Scott Maxwell from the Carlsbad Fire Department devised a webcam to put down into the hole, and their worst fears were realized.
Brader said Carlsbad Police and Fire Departments, the county emergency preparedness office, the mine rescue teams, specialists and heavy equipment operators who volunteered their time and equipment all worked in harmony under difficult and trying conditions.
He said as word spread in the community about the lost child, and the subsequent discovery of his body in the hole, the public turned out in great numbers.
"At times it was overwhelming," Brader said.

yes, a 130' deep well. i assume there will be questions why it wasn't covered. i haven't read any reports yet about whether it was a well in use. either way, it should have had a heavy cover.
the man whose yard the hole was in has been taken out of town by his son. He has stage four cancer and is devastated about all that has happened.
i am sorry the guy has cancer. but he has been there for years. why couldn't he put some sort of cover over a lousy 14" diameter hole??? CRIMINAL DAMN NEGLIGENCE!

Such a tragedy. Just another reason why I never let my son play anywhere I can not keep an eye on him. I feel terribly for his family but people please keep an eye on your children! A chain linked fence is not protection enough!
