KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 13-year-old Kansas City boy is back home after two teenagers poured gasoline on him and lit him on fire.

It happened Tuesday at the teen's home on Quincy Avenue, just down the street from Kansas City's East High School. The boy lives less than two blocks away from the school and was walking home when the attack happened.

Melissa Coon said her son turned from the school's stadium onto Quincy Avenue and noticed two teenagers following him. She said the teens followed her son home and attacked him outside his front door.

"And they rushed him on the porch as he tried to get the door open," she said. "(One of them) poured the gasoline, then flicked the Bic, and said, 'This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy'."

The two attackers ran away, and the eighth grader put the fire out with the shirt off his back. He managed to call 911 on his own, then his father. He was taken by ambulance to Children's Mercy Hospital and spent several hours in the hospital's burn unit.

"You could smell the burned skin," said Coon. "You could smell the burned hair. It was just horrible." Her son lost some of his eyelashes, eyebrows, and some of the hair around his face was singed. Coon said she knows her son is lucky -- but also can't believe someone would do that to her child.

Coon said the incident will have a lingering affect on her family. "My five year old came in and asked me, 'Mom, am I going to get set on fire today?'" she said. "I was in tears."

Coon said her family will move from their home and her son will not return to East High School. She said he thinks his attackers may be students there.

Police said the two suspects are male and have facial hair. Police said one was wearing a blue hat, blue jacket, and shoes with the number 23 on the side. The other wore a blue hat, a black jacket, and wore glasses.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

80% of the responses on this thread were based off of what OP posted and the link, the details in your quoted portion are different. No mentioning of "white boy" was in the story no mentioning of the 5 year old saying what he said and other things that do lead it to be a racially motivated crime. Your quoted portion is a lot more convincing of it being a racial crime.

Hate crime statutes are on the books in 45 states and Washington, D.C. Federal hate crime laws can carry sentences ranging from a year to life in prison -- even the death penalty can be imposed in hate crimes involving murder.

Hate crime laws don't punish speech or thoughts, which are protected by the First Amendment. But when an individual commits a crime based on biased beliefs and intentionally targets another for violence or vandalism, the person can be charged with violating a hate crime law and will face a stiffer sentence.

The original 1969 federal hate crime law covered race, religion, ethnicity and national origin. It now includes sexual orientation and disability.

I wonder how much media coverage this crime will get - or if President Obama will speak out about it.

Police in Kansas City are investigating a possible hate crime after a 13-year-old boy was doused in gasoline and set on fire. According to Allen Goin’s mother, the attack occurred just as her son was getting home from school. She said, “They rushed him on the porch as he tried to get the door open…one of them poured gasoline, then flicked the Bic and said, ‘This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve white boy.’”

The police say the boy was engulfed in a “large fireball,” but was able to beat out the flames to call 911 and his father. In addition to suffering first degree burns, he has lost his eyebrows, eyelashes, and part of the skin on his face. There is also long-term concern about his eyes and lungs.

The family intends to move out of fear that the attackers went to their son’s school, which KMBC reports he will not return to. Melissa Coon, the boy’s mother, said her youngest son, 5, asked her, “Mom, am I going to get set on fire today?”

Well, if they know who did it and they don't bring them in for questioning or arrest them, then it certainly should get the same level of attention. That's the difference IMO.

Kind of ironic that the last name is Coon.

What's ironic is that you think it depends on an arrest or questioning and not motivation.

Nice job picking up on the last name, that took some real intelligence.

Yeah, I thought the last name was ironic too.

You're right about the arrest part. In Treyvon's case, a good part of my initial outrage was that a jerk thought some kid looked like he was up to no good simply because he was black and wearing a hoodie, and killed this kid for that reason -- and then outrage that he wasn't arrested.

Hate Crime prosecutions, which increase the severity of the charges/sentence, have typically been pursued by the Feds. States have generally been hesitant to pursue them. Now, they're starting to be pursued at the local level.

Case in point...

The defendant, 26-year-old Mashawn Sonds (left), faces up to 25 years in prison for an October 2014 attack on a transgender woman in Brooklyn, New York.

Sonds was convicted of first-degree assault as a hate crime. It was the first trial conviction secured by the Brooklyn D.A.'s newly-created Hate Crime Unit, which is a part of its Civil Rights Bureau.

The violent attack took place on a Brooklyn street where Kimball Hartman (right) was walking with a gay male friend.

First, the pair was approached by a group that included Sonds, according to the DA's statement. One yelled, "We don't want faggots on our block," among other anti-gay slurs.

Sonds then picked up a piece of plexiglass and swung it at Hartman. As she tried to get away, he threw the plexiglass and struck her in the head, knocking her unconscious and causing Hartman to have seizures.

Hartman suffered profuse bleeding from the back of her head, according to the DA's office. She sustained a traumatic brain injury, underwent surgery to her skull, and will likely suffer permanent injuries.

Sonds will be sentenced on January 16th.

This winner from Iowa assaulted a black man after calling him racial slurs. And, he wore a surgical mask during his crime because he's "allergic to black people and didn't want to catch black germs".

And, this veteran from Wisconsin killed three of his neighbors. First he shot a father and son when he found out they were from Puerto Rico. Popp told them it's no wonder they couldn't speak English, that "you guys gotta go" and then shot them. The father died.

After shooting Manso-Perez and his son, Popp allegedly then kicked down the door of 36-year-old Phia Vue and his 32-year-old wife, Mai K. Vue where he found the couple along with their four children and a babysitter. Popp allegedly shot and killed Phia in the family’s home, and then dragged Mai Vue upstairs where he shot and killed her. The babysitter and the four children were able to escape during the chaos.

He hasn't been charged with a hate crime. He's undergoing psych eval in jail. http://reappropriate.co/2016/03/three-ki...g-rampage/
