Defence Secretary Philip Hammond

State-of-the-art RAF Typhoon fighter jets loaded with fearsome weapons patrolling the skies over the Home Counties;
A ring of six surface-to-air missile sites around London, each with the power to bring down rogue aircraft;
The aircraft carrier HMS Ocean will be moored in the Thames with 800 Royal Marines;
Seven Royal Navy Lynx and RAF Puma helicopters carrying crack snipers to target terrorists;
HMS Bulwark, the Royal Navy's 21,000-tonne flagship, and other vessels deployed off Weymouth, Dorset, to protect sailing events;
And 13,500 servicemen and women - more than are deployed in Afghanistan - on duty to keep the £9billion Olympics safe and secure.

The Army has done it, as has the airforce. Today it was the turn of the Royal Navy to show off the weapons it hopes it never has to use at the London Olympics.

HMS Ocean - the largest in the Navy - slipped up the Thames, past the tidal barriers, and up towards Greenwich to check out the berth, where it will monitor and protect London during the Olympics this summer.

The show of strength came as Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said today he was prepared to to give the order to shoot down a hijacked airliner if the Olympics were threatened by a 9/11-style attack.

It is a sight which many older generations thought they would never see in this country again.

Soldiers in residential tower blocks and green open spaces were yesterday pictured installing surface-to-air missiles at six sites across the capital, a show of strength not seen in this country since the Second World War.

With two weeks to go before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, it marks a dramatic development in the biggest peacetime security operation the country has ever seen.
