We were talking about this at dinner:

A South Carolina woman said police escorted her out of her daughter's graduation for cheering and charged her with disorderly conduct.

Shannon Cooper said she was escorted out of the South Florence High School graduation Saturday at Florence Civic Center for cheering when her daughter, Iesha Cooper, 18, received her diploma Tuesday.

"Humiliation. I don't even think humiliation could describe how I felt. You know, because I feel from just my feelings and then looking at my daughter how she felt, I could take you know you know if I did something ,but like I said, yes they said you'll be escorted out no problem. I'll be escorted out. I'll go nicely because I'm gonna cheer. It was hard work. I went through so much to get her to this point you know," Cooper said.

Police refused to comment on individual cases but said the crowd was warned anyone who cheered or screamed would be escorted out of the building. They said people who exhibited disorderly behavior while being escorted out were charged with disorderly conduct.

"Disorderly conduct? What's the disorderly conduct? How was I so disorderly you know any different from just a happy parent? I didn't resist arrest, nothing," said Cooper, who was released a few hours after her arrest on $225 bond.


Other versions of the story say she was escorted to a hallway then got rowdy with police.

I don't understand her behavior. Every parent is proud. If you scream and yell like an idiot, some other parent doesn't get to hear their child's name called.

My friends said it is an extra special event when a black person graduates in South Carolina. I disagree. Black folks (and some rednecks) bring air horns to graduations even though you have to sign a piece of paper agreeing to the rules.

I was in a class of more than 500 seniors, if the parents could hear our names it wasn't our fault we were loud disorderly and stoned out of our minds.

Some rules are just plain stupid.

my youngest son's graduation everyone was cheering. it was FUN and happy! it was in a large venue, a big Daytona events arena, the Ocean Center. it was appropriate to cheer for the kids.

CINCINNATI - Winning football teams are use to a lot of cheering.

But for the second leading tackler of the Mt. Healthy Fighting Owls, cheering has earned Anthony Cornist a penalty he doesn't think he deserves.

"It's crazy how somebody can do that to you," he said from his family's living room Monday.

When Anthony walked across the stage at his high school graduation, his family made some noise.

"It was my dream to graduate," he said.

"I'm very proud of my son," Traci Cornist said.

Apparently, so were a lot of others.

"Teachers, other students and other family members who weren't with us were also cheering for him also. He's well known," Traci said.

The excitement proved too much for the administration.

Instead of a diploma, Anthony got a letter from the principal, Marlon Styles, Jr.

"I will be holding your diploma in the main office," the letter said, "due to the excessive cheering your guests displayed during the roll call."

"I did nothing wrong except walk across the stage," Anthony said.

The school demands 20 hours of community service before he can graduate.

Those hours can be split between Anthony and his family, or the senior can perform them all himself.

"I don't understand how he's being punished for something he has no control over," Traci said. "I just thought that was ludicrous... I have no clue where the logic comes in."

Calls to the principal, the district superintendent as well as a visit to Mt. Healthy High School have all gone unanswered.

Anthony's mother says so will the penalty.

"He's definitely not doing the community service," she said. "I'm definitely not doing the community service."

That strategy could spell trouble for Anthony's game plan.

"I have a college right now that definitely needs my diploma," he said.

Technically the boy is no longer under the schools jurisdiction he has graduated.

The cheering only lasted for the minute it took that child to walk up and get their certificate. It's ridiculous that we can't even enjoy and applaud our children without getting into trouble. Has this world become so politically correct that any display of emotion is frowned upon? People need to lighten up.

And Cracker, maybe, just maybe that lady lives in an apartment complex not the projects. You can't tell from that picture. Besides, there are people that live in the projects that pay rent. Not all of them are Section 8. You are a racist plain and simple.

What if they signed an agreement?

Graduation is a ceremony. You don't graduate until your degree (or diploma) is conferred. They don't hand you the real diploma at the ceremony. You get it in the mail after they check to make sure you have fulfilled all the obligations (they can hoid a diploma for overdue books, too, or if you owe a suspension).

I don't know about graduations yet, but during most awards ceremonies at my kids' schools, the staff ask the kids and parents to hold their applause and cheers until a certain group has gone through (principal's list etc.). The kids tend to comply because the principal and teachers are there giving them the stinky eye. Except for the occasional squeak, the parents comply to follow the rules and because of peer pressure (you don't want to be one of the few dumbasses that can't control themselves).

If the parents don't mind sitting through a longer ceremony, I think they ought to let people cheer and bring the next student forward when the cheering subsides. But, depending on the size of the school, nobody should bitch if the commencement takes an extra hour or more.

What if graduation Belongs to the students and the Parents of the students?

What if there was a graduation and nobody came and they all just picked up their diploma in the office?

"This was my graduation, actually. haha She was way louder than any of the other parents and it lasted for quite a while. And she mislead reporters when she said everyone’s parents cheered. Maybe, 1 in every 20 students had any crowd noise and there were only 4 or 5 notably loud cheers. Everyone was warned beforehand to be silent, it’s her fault. It was pretty distracting."
