He was an interesting guy; did a lot in his 53 years on this planet.

I read a little about him in college. I always that of him as the mushroom worshipper. Haha. Sometimes I wonder how much bigger a role psychadelics could play in medicine if Leary hadn't pissed off the moral majority and the culture hadn't changed so drastically in the course of a decade.

Never read any of McKenna's works, nor have I read any of Huxley's. Might be interesting reads.

Read TM. You won't regret it. If you're interested in where you can find podcasts of many of his lectures let me know.

Found 'em, thanks. I'll give 'em a listen during the week.

Access Lorenzo's podcast through itunes. Search 'psychedelic salon'. Also free just a lot easier to pick through. His site is sort of disorderly compared.

Jesus Christ. I just listened to Psilocbyin and the Sands of Time from 1974. McKenna deserves a separate thread if you or anyone is ever interested in discussing him. I was expecting a very intelligent drug-trippy guru type - he was much more than that and it was way more interesting than I'd anticipated; enlightening.

In this one interview, through natural and very articulate conversation with no breaks, he covered evolution, death, birth, fear, ego, alchemy, biology, psychadelics as a passage through time, shamanism, aliens, etc...quoting several relevant literary passages without missing a word or a beat. Quite an advanced thinker and possibly off base on many things imo, but maybe right on the money on others, at least conceptually. Defininitely some concepts to ponder and explore further (I actually ended up taking notes).

Excellent listen - will definitely listen to the full series at Psychedlic Salon.

He is something special. That's for sure. Frankly, I had yet to decide if your persona is or isn't total bullshit. No offense. That's just me. If you can sit through McKenna and walk away with something valuable, you've earned a bit of respect from me. Probably worth little or nothing but I'm saying it anyway.

I tried to drum up some interest in TM at TK with some success. We can certainly do it here if anyone's interested.

Did you hear what happened to his library? You're gonna love that one...

I know you question personas; not sure how you can still wonder about me, but that doesn't matter.

I don't know what happened to his library (do tell), but some podcasts were missing from the archive as his brother Dennis has blocked them due to the book he was writing.

When he made the analogy that birth is death or after-life (leaving the womb and your full life therein, without choice, to enter an alternate state) and the "trip" would push one from the earthly life to the next one, he caught me off guard. I've heard similar concepts, but not so logically stated.

I also felt that "fear" and the conquering thereof was a core point in his works and philsophies, though he didn't say that explicitly and I could be wrong. I'm going to listen again. But, that's something that I've always believed (so maybe I inferred it, but I don't think so).

I was actually laughing a couple of times. I dont recall the name of the renowned psychedelic researcher he referred to, but he basically called him a major pussy - in a very thoughtful and articulate manner. He used this researcher as the example of why progress hadn't been made at the speed it should. This researcher had conducted hundreds of experiments with others and taken the drug himself many times, but had done so at such low doses that he'd never even closed his eyes during the trip. To McKenna, without exceeding the safety boundaries and tapping into the unknown "dashboard" of the mind, that guy's work was just bullshit. I agree. Anybody can take a trip - not the same as the possibly fatal journey.

McKenna seemed to feel the failure of scientists and academic researchers to really go all out with psychedelic drug research to explore what it is that man should and can = similar to how you perceive religion held back man's progress (just based on what you've expressed in your posts).

Anyway I'm rambling because while I'm quite analytical, I'm also very open to the fact that there's a lot more that I (and we, collectively) don't know than there is known to us. McKenna was no quack; really exquisite thinker and speaker. I may end up rejecting a lot of his contentions because I think they're wrong or because I'm not an advanced enough thinker to accept them (and I'll likely never take the level of Psilocybin required to see what he saw), but there's a lot in his philosphies that really stand separate from the drug and are worth considering, imo. Turned on.

@ Hotd - Here's the basics. You can find plenty more if you want. Tragic loss.

Big loss.

Glad that he had some works published. I've got a great corner bookstore just up the street. Old school and not really well organized so I always have to dig (which I love, if I have time). These are the two I'll be on the look out for on Friday:

Given that McKenna lived in the Bay Area for some time and studied at Berkeley, I'm sure I'll be able to get my hands on something locally soon. Still gonna work through the podcasts too because I really enjoyed him as a speaker.
