Police search Columbus for man accused of killing Ashland mother Lynn Jackenheimer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus officers searched the city’s east side Tuesday night for the man accused of killing Ashland mother of two Lynn Jackenheimer.

Columbus police said a witness claimed they spotted 27-year-old Nate Summerfield and his car at an apartment complex near East Broad Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road. Police cars swarmed the area, as a helicopter searched from the sky. Just before midnight, the active search ended, Columbus police said.

On Monday, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina issued an arrest warrant for Summerfield for his ex-girlfriend's murder. The 33-year-old’s remains were discovered in a trash bag by a construction worker in North Carolina on Saturday, but were not positively identified until Monday afternoon.

"He treated her like a bag of garbage where he threw her and it wasn't right," said Jackenheimer's step-father, Raymond Johnson. "And I can't wait till they catch you, Nate, because that's the same treatment that you need. The same you did to my daughter Nate is coming back at you."

According to police, Jackenheimer, Summerfield, their 3-year-old son and Jackenheimer’s 13-year-old daughter went to Nags Head for vacation over the Fourth of July. On July 8, Summerfield dropped the children off with a family member and hasn't been seen since. Summerfield might be driving a dark gray Honda Civic with Ohio license plate FMV 7540.

"My brother was in North Carolina with his ex-girlfriend. He came back and said he strangled her, he dropped his kid off and left," said Summerfield's brother, Jake, told dispatchers more than a week ago.

Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said Jackenheimer was strangled and stabbed to death.

"We're not sure what exactly was going on at the time of (Lynn's) death. The last place she was seen alive, that we can say, was at their rental cottage," Doughtie said, during a news conference.

"He (Nate Summerfield) dumped a bag of fertilizer on her (Lynn) to cover up the smell," Johnson said.

Glimpse inside murder suspect Nate Summerfield's hotel room finds popcorn, pudding, Pop-Tarts...r

WADSWORTH, Ohio - Suspected killer Nate Summerfield spent about 24 hours hiding inside a Wadsworth motel room as federal marshals moved in Wednesday morning and arrested him without incident.

Summerfield had been on the run since July 8 when he dropped his children off with a family member and was since on the run.

His brother told police that Summerfield killed his ex-girlfriend, Lynn Jackenheimer, while they vacationed in North Carolina.

NewsChannel5's investigative team first reported that Summerfield was arrested by the Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force Wednesday morning at the Legacy Inn in Wadsworth.

Investigators had searched the room and removed the sheets searching for any possible evidence linking him to the murder.

Later, we gained access to the room where Summerfield was hiding and found he was living on a diet of microwave popcorn, Jello pudding and Pop-Tarts. There were empty Mountain Dew containers in the trash.

The room was dirty -- a cigarette butt, matches and a wet bath towel were all on the floor (as if Summerfield had just showered). The sheets were pulled off the king-size bed, but that could be due to police looking for evidence.

The curtains were pulled tight, and the do-not-disturb sign was on a chair.

The hotel said Summerfield checked in at about 8 a.m. Tuesday under the name "Jay Summerfield." The cost per night was $50 and Summerfield paid cash.
