Do you own your own bullshit? Many people don't & will justify their actions or push the blame on others.
A young woman was drunk at a party & foolishly decided to slide down the bannister, she fell to her death instead and now her parents are suing the hotel where it occurred. Their daughter is dead because she was a drunken dumbass.

Wow, she was beautiful.
I have done some stupid things when I was drunk and in my twenties. Looking back, I swear I had a guardian angel.
I am accountable for my mistakes. Unless of course, it's someone else's fault.

The story didn't give a lot of detail. The parents are suing on the claim that the party/event hosts irresponsibly served too much alcohol, but doesn't specifically indicate that the 23 year old woman was drunk or what a tox screen revealed. We can assume she was drunk, but it doesn't matter to me either way.
I did some foolish and risky things at 23 years old, usually while partying but sometimes not. Some of them could have resulted in death. If that had happened and my parents had attempted to profit off of a tragedy brought upon by my own foolishness, it would be understandable for people to think that they were exploiting my death or disrespecting my memory by attempting to hold others accountable for my choice. That's how I feel about these parents.
To be gracious, maybe it's denial or grief that's driving them, but it's been 9 months since their daughter died and even those emotions don't justify this lawsuit, imo. I believe that they will lose.

Don't blame the people who sue- they're only lashing out as a way of exercising their grief.
I blame the jury who awards outlandish and lavish awards, doing so with a somber mood, without emotion.

Since when does a hotel have to provide supervision and protection for adults that are drinking? Has it come to that point in our society? I was a bartender many years ago when they came out with the dram laws. We as bartenders/servers could be held responsible for the actions of drunk patrons since we were the ones who served them the alcohol. Thought it was bullshit then, still think it's bullshit now.
It's time for our citizens to pull on their big boy (girl) pants and own up to their own actions. If you decide to get wasted and drive, or try to slide down a banister on the 4th floor, that's on you buddy.

Fixed it. I don't think it's just grief based. They want monetary compensation.

I take responsibility for my actions. Its part of being a grown up. I know someone who thinks everyone else should be accountable for HER actions. One night, she wore these 7" high heels out. She got obnoxious drunk and her date left her and she had to walk home. She walked across the tracks and fell after her heel got stuck in the railroad tie. She wasn't hurt badly but man oh man, she was suiing everyone. Her date, the city, she even talked about suiing the bar for serving her when she was already drunk and for not providing a taxi service. I was in there one night when she was carrying on about it and I had to explain to her how being an obnoxious drunk and walking home and falling is no ones fault but her own. She wasn't very happy because I suppose I wasn't very nice about it but jesus christ, shut the fuck up, ya boozer. I've heard round the way she hasnt been in there since.
Just shut up. Just shut the fuck up right now.

People excercising personal responsibility would solve most of the problems in society.
But then what would all the lawyers and bureaucrats do?

They'd drown their sorrows in drink and then drive, expect hand-outs from others...
Well you did say " people excercising personal responsibility...". Did you mean that to include the lawyers and bureaucrats too?
j/k, of course.

Very clever.
I view them sort of like the undead. They are kind of like people, but really just want to suck the life blood out of us.
