The quad swarm is pretty cool and I can easily see them being deployed in a tactical situation for "Eyes". The cameras can be coordinated and the image stitched together to give a Live 3D image of whatever is going on. I have built a couple of these things and they are very cool to play with. I have an entry for next years "Beer Lift". The object is to use a remote controlled multirotor aircraft and see how much Beer you can lift with it.

Dean Kamen has been working on similar robots with deka using segway type gyro balance systems. Although you will not see it in the media.
