i don't watch much TV, but will give certain new series a shot. for example, tonight ⁸⁄₁₇ at 9 eastern, BOSS on Starz.
only because i like Kelsey Grammer. anyone watch season I ?

Crimson Petal & The White (DVD)

Compulsory & addictive, it mimes froth of Victorian London Sts. Cinematography, costumes & sets force viewers deeper into its dark psychological story. The plot and writing are less than stellar. Lead characters portrayals leave one mesmerized by the despicable dearth and poverty of a Dickensian era. Catherine Cookson's poor and low-class tales come to mine too. Don't expect glamor and Victorian gaiety, but every form of crime and dereliction known of the time, 1874. No sympathy, it's lost in strong crass depictions that leave little to imagine. Mad, cunning women are played so well the viewer begins to hate, not adore these characters. Yet it's a mini-series you'll love hating.

The camera's eye, focused on the disgust of the dirty streets and rooms, is filmed so cunningly it resembles Impressionism art done with dark color. Not a love story, but debauchery glistening from mud, vomit, blood and ale. Stunning visuals obligate viewing. Romola Garai (Emma; Amazing Grace) turns sharply from roles like "Emma." As Sugar, she's sweet/sour in her portrayal both with and without clothing as she passes from prostitute, to mistress, to governess. Her Mom and Madam (Gillian Anderson- Bleak House) is so convincing she seems to have literally taken a turn into the underworld. Mrs. Fox (Shirley Henderson- Wish Me Luck: Series 3) seems unable to decide which side of the orgies she desires. William (Chris O'Dowd) will disgust men and women, with and without garments. Plenty more adding to a coarse, disturbing image of poverty and orgy coming to life. Adults only, strongly recommended.

Wm gets Sugar an apt. She becomes `guardian angel' to another woman, to her gainful advantage. A mistress becomes obsessed. Mrs Fox and Wm's bro have their own bodily fantasies.

If you can't handle earthy, ghastly, sexual crudeness, give it a pass. I'm not sold that the film needed all of it, but it is there. This tames Cookson films and "Lady Chatterley's Lover."

It's a vast wasteland here on antenna. It's been a little better for the last few years since there's an oldies channel now but they only run a couple good hours per day. Except on Saturdays there will nothing all day on any channel.

I watch dvd's or vhs's or, more typically, turn on the stereo.

Pretty much the only thing I watch on t.v. is the news and I listen to it on my car radio too.

Plus I RARELY go to or watch movies (I don't get 95% of the movie references in here). I'm a little ADD I think. I find it hard to just sit down and watch a movie or show. I usually only have the t.v. on for me when I'm doing other things (laundry, cooking etc.). I love reading though.

I got about 25 channels with nothing on.

Damned if I'll pay $100 a month to have another 300 channels with nothing on.

A lot of my friends have antenna and almost never watch. One of my friends took his working TV out since it was just clutter. The news is all lies and the shows are non-stop ads. About the only thing I can stomach is the rare time PBS puts something on and the oldies channel. The oldies channel is excellent (at least they try). They put on uncut episodes when they can find them. This is my biggest problem with commercial TV; the ads are pervasive and never ending. They run them to the exclusion of even tornado warnings more than they put the show on. Then the show flashes name brands as paid advertising as th channel runs their ad superimposed right on the show. Then the bastards will run a streaming ad for something else.

My only use for ads is to know what not to buy. 85 minutes a year is enough.

TV died about '95 and everyone forgot to bury it.

Now it looks like government is going to prop it up by running endless "public service" spots. My tax dollars will be pumped in because companies are finally coming to understand people quit watching their damn ads when someone invented the remote.

There might be a lot more of us than you think.

The damn telephone will be the next thing to go. It's already dying. You either get one implanted or go to one of the $20 a year things. The world is getting crazier every year. I'm too stubborn to adapt. I get my news on the net or al Jazeera. The Ruskies used to say there's no news in Tass (it means "truth") and no truth in Investia (it means "news"). This is like our media except the Ruskies didn't have to watch 85 minutes of ads to get their lies and history.

I stopped watching, listening to and reading the news several years ago. I've never felt better.

Watch the foreign news. It's not very cheery by a long sight but most countries actually tell the truth (or try). The media in this country is owned by the banks and they want to divert attention from what they are doing. They have more interest in moralizing and pushing a sick agenda than in presenting news.

You still can't believe anything you hear but I like the idea that the people presenting the news aren't intentionally twisting, massaging, and pre-editing it for me. Almost everything you see on the news here is a lie on at least one level. The sickest lie they've told a million times is that all these people being murdered in the city were accidental; caught in the cross fire. They need gangs to profit on drugs so the media protects them and their recruitment practices.

I am digging mindless Big Brother as I do each summer. When it first started a hundred years ago, we always spent the week at Red Neck Rivera aka Myrtle Beach at our Trailer, yeah I said Trailer! But bonus it was at the beach! We could only pick up PBS and CBS. So our family always watched BB. Reminds of simpler times when I didn't have to work such long hours and could actually take a vacation.

True Blood is winding down, although I am not thrilled with this season, except Tara being a VAMP---I would totally turn Lesiban in a second for her!

Game of Thrones is months away, as is Spartacus (although I don't like the new one---RIP Andy Whitfield).

One thing I AM looking forward to is Sons of Anarchy although I fear they jumped the Shark.

Mad about Downton! Michelle Obama 'begged ITV bosses' for Downton Abbey DVDs ahead of its US release

The reelection is won, so it's no wonder Michelle Obama is looking for some relaxing entertainment to get through those four more years.
And the first lady of the United States is turning to British television to get her quick fix.
It has been reported that Michelle Obama is such a big fan of hit show Downton Abbey, that she turned to ITV bosses to try and get her hands on season three, ahead of its official US release date.
