You could count me among the pissed. WTF are they thinking?
A lot of media outlets, in America, France itself, and many countries have never been open to publishing Charlie Hebdo's Muhammad-mocking cartoons. Since the cartoons aren't news, it doesn't really bother me that they won't publish them now.
It kinda surprised me, not in a bad way, that CNN published The Guardian cartoon with the word "fuck" and the terrorists in skeleton suits and mickey mouse ears.
Anyway, I support full freedom of speech and satire, but also respect the rights of those who don't want to publish what they consider highly provocative opinion -- so long as the press is free to choose whether to publish or abstain.
Here's a list of some outlets that will and won't publish specific Hebdo cartoons and their rationales: http://www.imediaethics.org/News/4984/Wh...part_2.php

If they have a regular policy of not publishing the cartoons, I think they generally have every right to decide what they will/won't publish. However, now the cartoons are absolutely news (the terrorists made them such) so in honor of those who died expressing free speech, I think it's acquiescing to those that will kill over such things if they're not publishing them now (as part of this story).
I'm not suggesting that they should start running them regularly but they're clearly part of THIS news story so IMO, they can't accurately report the story without showing what these people were killed for.
I only heard that one report--maybe CNN is showing cartoons that relate to this particular incident. If so, I'm okay with that. If they're not, why not? The extremists deserve what they're getting...MORE widespread publication of the exact types of cartoons they killed over.
Later CNN can go back to NOT regularly featuring those cartoons if that's their policy. I don't recall seeing cartoons on CNN anyway--although they should be there if they make the news.
Damn, I think I just said the same thing 4 different ways.

I get your point, user. And, I can see why media outlets that choose not to feature the cartoons specifically ridiculing Muhammad might alienate a segment of their audience which believes that those depictions are crucial to the story.
In this case, anyone who wants to see the hundreds of Muhammad mocks which might have factored into the motive for the crime can easily find them by searching "Charlie Hebdo" or checking a less conservative media source.
IDK. I wouldn't expect CNN or NBC or like media sources to feature mangled bodies when they cover car accidents, or publish nude shots of an exotic dancer who gets killed on the job by a deranged customer/perv, or publish a bunch of expletives if they're covering a story about a guy who gets beat to shit for hurling them at somebody either. Personally, more is more for me too when it comes to details of any type. But, I represent only one segment of the audience. And, I do believe that competent media sources can provide sufficient context with background info and descriptions, without having to breach their policies against publishing certain types of content. I know where to look if I want something more or something different.

What a mess.
Police have reportedly got the Charlie Hebdo murder suspects cornered in a printing press building where they reportedly have one hostage. They say they want to die as martyrs. The older brother is the one who served time for sending fighters to Iraq. Police are investigating whether the younger one fought with al-Qaeda in Yemen.
SWAT is everywhere and explosives have just reportedly been detonated.

Meanwhile, two dipshits who police believe are connected to the brothers and responsible for killing a female police officer yesterday have taken at least five hostages at a Jewish deli. They claim they will kill the hostages if police storm the printing press where the brothers are holed up.
There are the dipshits:

More than 80,000 personnels are now on the ground to tackle the two hostage situations in Dammartin (printing press) and porte de Vincennes (Jewish Deli), according to the French interior minority.
ETA: It's just been reported that the hostages at both sites have all been freed and the terrorists at both sites have been killed. Sounds too good to be true, but I hope it is.

I hope they kill every single one of them then go over the place looking for any paperwork and computers that may hold more info. Put at least 20 holes in each one. It would save some money, maybe keep one and pull their fingernails out slowly until he or she squeals like a pig.

It's pretty amazing if all of the hostages were freed, considering that both sets of terrorists had murdered police officers and others leading up to the showdown; no regard for human life. Hats off to the French authorities.
It sounds like the female accomplice (and girlfriend) of the deli hostage-taker wasn't with him at the deli.
France is on high terrorist alert -- I hope they get some peace now.

Thanks Duchess. The Guardian reports that all hostages were reportedly freed sounded too good to be true.
That Sky News report indicates that at least 4 were killed at the deli, damn it -- their report sounds more accurate.
RIP to all of the murdered hostages.

I've heard a couple reporters questioning why this didn't go down simultaneously. They are blaming that as the reason there were hostages killed.

It was weird following the events live. The deli terrorist has just reportedly told police that he'd kill the hostages if the print building was stormed and, immediately thereafter, the print building was up in smoke. I wonder if the hostage that the brothers reportedly held captive there really made it out alive; it seems so from the Sky News report - good to hear.

I think facts get jumbled in times like this. Some of it looks like absolute chaos and the gunfire was freakin' incredible. Tatatatatatatat. I would have thought it was pretty cool if not for the hostages. And the man power, woooo, so many LEOs.

Ponder this:
Border Security: As terror-torn France and other European countries put curbs on Islamic immigration, the Obama administration is waving foreign Muslim nationals into the U.S. in record numbers.
According to a recent Center for Immigration Studies report, America between 2010 and 2013 imported more people from Muslim countries than Central America and Mexico combined. And now, with the president's executive amnesty, the welcome mat is bigger than ever.
That's a major shift in immigration flows — and one that poses a major national security threat.
If just a fraction of these nearly 300,000 new Muslim immigrants follow in the footsteps of the Franco-Algerian brothers who just terrorized Paris, we could be facing chronic terror. The main homeland threat from groups like the Islamic State comes through our immigration system. If they also use our loose policies as a vehicle for jihad, we will face the same crisis as France and the rest of Eurabia.

I don't dispute the potential risk but weren't these people French citizens? I honestly don't know but somehow I assumed that based on some of the reports I heard (spoke flawless French etc).

In the context of immigration it does. Do we know if they immigrated there? I can't recall.

Well, if it's true recent attacks seem to indicate that we have a huge threat of natural born citizens going all crazy jihad too. But no, as I said, opening the door to increasing numbers of people from Muslim countries obviously seems risky/stupid to me. I can't see any reason at this juncture to make it easier to immigrate from one of those countries to here given the circumstances. I'd rather bring in more spics. We need more apple pickers, not convenience store owners/workers.

NPR has been saying they were both born in Paris, but raised in foster homes and orphanages. Supposedly well integrated into french society, although criminals
