Edit: sorry... read further. I'm guessing he didn't tell you what happened to them, until it was too late? Seriously, I think I would murder someone over that. That is beyond evil.

My ex tried to shoot one of our dogs one time, for biting the puppy who got to close to her food dish and I had to literally wrestle the loaded gun out of his hands... but generally speaking he did (does) care about the animals and although he wouldn't help take care of them, never tried to hurt them aside from that incident.
