I cannot speak for all branches of the Military but in the Marines(may have changed these days),you go into a recruiter to discuss your interests.They are supposed to see what you would like to be,show you the choices with that M.O.S(job or trade).For example,...you choose infantry.You have 0311(Grunt or footsoldier),0351- weapons(machine guns,mortars,small missle systems) or motor transport,mechanic,foodservice(cooks),adminstrative..etc.
Each MOS has different fields.
So,when you enlist in the Marines you can choose prior to Basic Training what you would LIKE to do.In the Corp tho,..as you progress thru Boot Camp and they see you gonna make it,they will then get the orders from Headquarters as to what you shall be.If the Corp needs grunts and you have a MOS of adminstrative,well,..sorry about your luck,...now your a Grunt.
If this is the way it still being done and also thru all branches,every potential recruit should be told this.
If this is not the way it is and if you choose a MOS and you are guarenteed it,then all recruits will have the choice to take those MOS's that are revelant to the combat units...and get their wish to experience it.Those that do not wish it would have their choice that way also.
