Is cursive writing a lost art?

I watched a story about this on the news. Schools are dropping this from their curriculum as classroom time is at a premium.

I don't agree that it should be dropped but what da hell do I know. I've seen handwriting of many adults & it looks like chicken scratching.

I am one of the old schoolers..and I say keep it in. BUT I do understand why it is being dropped, because everyone is using keyboards rather than handwriting. I am seeing even with myself, the only time I use cursive is when I write my signature, otherwise I just print...and often I notice I print in all caps. SO I am shouting when I print. Deal with it.
But I would hate to see it go.

Handwritten letters are nearly a thing of the past.

For people under the age of 35, I'd bet 98% of correspondence is either in the form of an e-mail, text, or printed document.

I learned to write cursive in 2^nd grade, what are they doing that they don't have time to teach the kid how to write the alphabet in cursive so they at least know how to sign their name?

They already took it away a few years ago around here.

They are talking about bringing it back starting next year. Most everyone wants it back, even the teachers.

This is the first I'm hearing of this and I'm very surprised that educators would go along with it.

My kids had maybe one semester of cursive in 3^rd grade. I should have taught them more myself but I didn't. Occasionally they're called on to sign their names and they take as long as someone first learning to write.

Maybe I'll make them master it this summer but it's definitely going away.

Most people under 26 cannot write for shit. I teach my kids Calligraphy they love it, especially my son he is the artist. If schools don't teach it to bad, my kids will know it.

I took it in the 2^nd grade and was never really any good at it, I think my brain runs faster than my hand.
Can't remember the last time I wrote anything in cursive other than my signature. I took 2 semesters of drafting in college, so I print pretty much everything I do have to write, even then it sometimes requires an interpreter.
If I have to do annotations on a drawing or something I can do that well enough, but I am not fast at it.
A good PDF editor makes that much easier.

No I don't think cursive writing is a lost art.

I think it is introduced far too early, little ones need time to master holding a pencil and learn to print. So I am for printing first ABC and then when they begin reading the printing matches the story books. I'd be sticking with non stop printing for at least 5 years like a little apprentice.

When we apply for a job or fill in government papers most of the time it states Please Print clearly

Plenty of time for cursive writing.
