I would guess LE has the ability to hear what is going on in that bunker and I assume they're asking to hear from the kid occasionally. I don't think he's dead.

If they knew the boy wasn't ok, that dude would be dead already.

I agree. If the kid is killed, this guy is toast.
Some talk is that early on in this situation,...the guy wanted to trade the kid for a reporter to tell his story.
I believe this was the reason for taking the kid in the first place,as a way of getting leverage to get somene to listen to whatever the hell he thinks he needs to say

hostage situation enters the 6th day as Dykes says he is making the 5 year old boy, identified only as, Ethan, "as comfortable as possible". comfort items include - potato chips, coloring books and toys have been sent into the bunker for Ethan through a ventilation pipe that leatoto to the 6x8 subterranean hideout four feet underground.

"because Ethan is autistic, he has behavior problems, and she doesn't want him to get into one of those moods where he is uncontrolable. she's scared what would happen" - a neighbor is quoted as saying this that lives next to the boy and his mother.

the boys birthday is on Wednesday according to the second link. it seems coincidental but when there are big stories like this it always seem like the birthday come shortly after or during, I hope his released and safely, soon! CBS News said the boy turns 6 on Wednesday

edit: I also agree if the boy were dead, I believe they wouldn't be waiting to go in IMO. I think they would have no problem going in there or plugging the ventilation whole or putting some gas in there to drive him out, but I don't think they'll do that with Ethan in there.

It's being reported today that the FBI is prepared to let this standoff continue for as long as they can confirm the boy is still alive. The crazy old man is allowing comfort items to be delivered to Ethan, things like a favorite blanket and toys.

Finding any details is proving to be difficult. I've read one report of the sound of three explosions taking place inside of a ten minute window and the sound of gunshots, that's it. I can't even get that confirmed.

Jimmy Lee Dykes Dead: 5-Year-Old Hostage Rescued In Alabama Standoff
Via The Huff Post
The standoff between law enforcement and an Alabama man who held a boy in a bunker for seven days ended with the suspect dead and the 5-year-old safely rescued.

Reports of an explosion at Jimmy Lee Dykes' Midland City property came first on Monday afternoon, followed by media reports of the 65-year-old's death.

At a hastily organized roadside press conference near the crime scene, FBI agent Steve Richardson said negotiations had deteriorated over the last 24 hours. He said they entered the bunker shortly after 3 p.m. fearing the child was "in imminent danger," because they'd seen Dykes carrying a firearm.

The crisis began Jan. 29 when authorities say Dykes boarded a school bus and demanded that he take two boys between six and eight years old. The bus driver -- Charles Albert Poland, Jr. -- is hailed as a hero for putting himself between Dykes and the children. His valor cost him his life, as Dykes allegedly shot Poland several times before taking the 5-year-old boy from the bus.

"You didn't deserve to die but you died knowing you kept everyone safe," said a letter from a student on Poland's bus that was read aloud at the bus driver's funeral.

The bunker in which Dykes holed up was four feet underground. He equipped it with electricity and was said to possibly have weeks of supplies stored. Negotiators communicated to him through a ventilation pipe. Because of the risk of tornadoes in this part of Alabama, bunkers are a relative fixture on the landscape.

Authorities sent Ethan's prescription medicine as well as items the boy requested like Cheez-Its snacks and a red Hot Wheels toy car.

I am very glad to know that Ethan will be home with his family for his birthday! I really hope that he truely was kept unharmed by Dykes and that Ethan will receive help for anything he saw during his rescue. It is truly sad that the bus driver had to give his life especially hearing that he was going to give Dykes some homemade treats for ironing out the road that very day but may he rest in peace, i believe he was laid to rest this weekend.

SC does it sound like they had "eyes and ears" in the bunker? I just heard on tv that Dykes was making movements in the bunker with the gun that were worrisome? This was on HLN that i heard that and the story above definitely makes mention about the negotiations going "south".

I'm interested in what his story is and why he did it. How come some reporter did not offer themseves up for what could have been the story of the year.

Details of the rescue operation emerged today after it was revealed an elite team of FBI agents built a mock bunker and inserted a spy camera into the lair to rescue Ethan after a week of meticulous and secretive planning.

The FBI Hostage Rescue Team blew the doors off the bunker and shot dead the survivalist during the daring raid yesterday afternoon after footage from a secret hi-tech camera showed the boy’s life was in ‘imminent danger’.

Agents became increasingly concerned the 65-year-old's behavior would turn violent after their negotiations with him 'deteriorated' in the final 24 hours.

FBI Special Agent Steve Richardson said: 'Dykes was observed holding a gun. 'At this point, the FBI agents, fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child.'
