A press conference is under way in Los Angeles. LAPD police commander Andrew Smith corrects an earlier report from the Riverside County police chief that a body had been found and identified in the cabin. He says no body has been found, and indeed the fire in the cabin is so hot that officers have not been able to enter the cabin.

Law enforcement officials jumped to the defense Tuesday night to repudiate reports that Christopher Dorner’s body was discovered.
Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz retracted his statement, less than an hour after Riverside police Assistant Chief Chris Vicino relayed a message to the city council from the chief that Dorner was in the cabin and was dead.
LAPD officials also contradicted a statement from Police Chief Charlie Beck that with certainty, Dorner was dead inside the charred cabin.
LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said at 8 p.m. that a body had not been found.
“Any reports that a body was found are not true,” Smith said. “Any reports that a body was identified as Christopher Dorner are not true.”
He said the cabin was too hot for authorities to enter and the identification of any body inside – if one were found – would take days, or possibly weeks.
“Until Dorner is in handcuffs or confirmed deceased, we will continue investigating as if he’s still out there,” Smith said. “Anyone who assisted him is criminally culpable.”

Big Bear Lake, California (CNN) -- It may take days before authorities can officially determine whether Christopher Jordan Dorner's body was found in the ashes of a torched cabin near Big Bear Lake, California.

But several signs early Wednesday seemed to suggest that the ex-Los Angeles police officer's vendetta against his brothers in blue ended in that wooden cabin with a shootout that left one deputy dead and another wounded.

The frenzied manhunt, road blocks and helicopter flights, which had brought the mountain town to a standstill for six days, died down Tuesday night.

And late in the evening, authorities announced that they found human remains in the cabin and would need forensic experts to identify them.

A Boy Scout leader carjacked by Christopher Dorner seconds before the 'killer cop' opened deadly fire on officers and barricaded himself in a cabin has revealed the terrifying moments with the man who shot dead four people and wounded three others.

Dorner ordered Heltebrake out of the car - but the man did not want to leave his Dalmatian, Suni, behind.

'He said, "I don't want to hurt you, start walking up the road and take your dog with you",' Heltebrake recounted. 'Within about 10 seconds I heard a volley of gunfire.'

He said that Dorner had turned his truck around and headed back down the hill and came across a sheriff's vehicle, which had been close behind.

'They came face to face and one of those sheriff's deputies ended up dying,' Heltebrake said.

Dorner is believed to have died inside the remote mountain cabin in the San Bernardino National Forest where he barricaded himself and held officers at bay for about two hours.

Authorities announced on Wednesday that they believe Dorner is dead. A charred body was found in the remote cabin where he barricaded himself and held officers at bay for about two hours. The cabin caught fire and burned to the ground in the midst of the standoff.

Dorner's drivers license was found in the rubble, but forensic tests must confirm the identity of the remains.

I was having a conversation last night with my boyfriend that I believe they will find a body in the cabin and I bet you it won't be his body but that he will set it off that way to divert LEO. while the LEO is testing the body he has the chance to get away, I surely hope it is him. But before that article came outlast night I was already thinking what if it's not and he planned for this. it's already known he had oxygen cans to provide himself air, he could have gotten out of there based in that knowledge and knowing that he is trained to the level he is, I dont think he as "snuck" up on and killed.

yah I feel it's his body....burnt to a crisp! When you do bad things, bad things happen. That's how I was raised. Oh and Don't ever call us from jail because you'll sit there. Needless to say, I haven't had to call yet and hope I never do. I try to stay clear of drama.

Dont get me wrong i hope it is i am saying i just wont be surprised if its not. I doubt that he would try to pass a dog's body off as a human body but the thought crossed my mind as the guy said he didn't want to leave behind his dalmatian, did Dorner take the dog in the cabin with him, and i'd hope to god that LEO would know the difference between human bone and dog bone. But if the cabin burnt to the ground is a body going to be recognizable or is it going to be bones? i'm asking because i don't know.

What better way to get him in a compromising position than having to flee a burning structure, with cops surrounding it?

Reminds me of the last scene from 'Butch Cassidy & Sundance'... running into a massacre.

In this case, Dorner was either already mortally wounded, or decided to kill himself rather than run into the execution squad.

I have my doubts if it is his body, but I certainly hope so and not another innocent victim.

I believe I heard the wallet was found around the first day or so. although I did hear they found his license in the rubble.

He killed fellow officers. The sheriff is saying they did not deliberately set the fire in response to accusations they did. Who cares if they did?

I don't think anyone cares in the sense that you mean but we are supposed to be living in a civilized world where the cops are the good guys. What's good about lowering yourself to the standards of those that you are trying to lock up? Personally, I don't care how they got him but if they can't get a hold of someone they have cornered without resorting to fire they probably need a little more training.
