New Castle County Courthouse Shooting: Delaware Police Say 3 Dead, 2 Injured

Authorities in Delaware responded Monday morning to reports of gunshots fired inside the New Castle County Courthouse, Delaware Online reports.

Two women, including the shooter's estranged wife, were fatally wounded in the incident. Two police officers were also transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Authorities say the shooter is dead, NBC Philadelphia reports.

The shooter opened fire around 8:00 a.m. inside the public lobby of the courthouse, a state police spokesperson said. He did not pass through the security perimeter located a few feet inside the front doors.

Authorities said that there are eight to 10 officers on the courthouse campus at any given time. Multiple schools in Wilmington, Del., have been placed on lockdown.

WILMINGTON, Del. — The mayor of Wilmington, Del., says a man suspected of killing his wife and wounding two others at the New Castle County Courthouse is dead.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams said Monday in a telephone interview that the shooter was killed by police. Williams says he was told the man shot and killed his wife and wounded two other people about 8:10 a.m. Monday. Williams says the couple were estranged.

A Wilmington police spokesman said earlier in the day that three people were shot. Cpl. Jamaine Crawford said the victims were two women and a man. The man was described as a security person.

Hours after the shooting, there was still a heavy police presence around the courthouse and streets were blocked off.
