Predator cuts off ankle monitor, rapes 10 year old, kills her mother

Syracuse, N.Y. -- David J. Renz, the 29-year-old Cicero man charged with stabbing a school librarian to death and raping a 10-year-old girl, knew his way around technology.

Renz, who has a computer science degree from SUNY Oswego, deactivated his ankle bracelet at 7 p.m., according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Fletcher. His curfew required him to stay at his mother’s house on Lakeshore Road.

Police said Renz followed the child out of the CNY Gym Centre around 9 p.m. He tied up Bresnahan and raped the child in the mall parking lot, police said. Then he drove Bresnahan’s car to nearby Verplank Road in the town of Clay.

The child escaped while Renz was stabbing Bresnahan. Bresnahan died of the wounds at Upstate University Hospital.

Let the "criminals" busted for marijuana possession go and keep any asshole arrested for any crime related to children locked up. This Adonis got released without any bail requirements; only a curfew and ankle bracelet. Pffft. Shouldn't happen. Maybe this case can be a catalyst for change.

Well said. To me, things like this point out how incredibly important it is to be vigilant at ALL times.

I won't devolve into what NY has done regarding the 2^nd amendment, but citizens being restricted while evil like this occurs is dumbfounding.

And FFS, isn't there enough evidence at this point that people who have child pornography are a danger to society? LOCK THEM UP!

Late Friday afternoon, Renz was brought back to U.S. District Court for violating the conditions of his release. Renz, who is unusually short and has a deformed jaw, had cotton stuffed up both nostrils when he appeared in court. He told his lawyers, James Greenwald and Kenneth Moynihan, that he had been beat up while being held this afternoon. His face was swollen and he told them his nose was broken.

The lawyers said other inmates beat Renz.

Except in cases where the offenders are juveniles, I've not heard of this before. Booking photos are usually public record, to the best of my knowledge.

I don't know what "polluting the investigation" means either. Obviously, the LEOs involved in the case know what Renz looks like, so how would releasing the photos to the public in any way affect their investigation?

The OP article indicates that Renz was caught even before probation officers were informed that he'd deactivated his monitor. Curious as to how the little girl escaped him and how Renz's apprehension went down.

The girl was later found by a passing motorist (HOTD: near where her mother was stabbed to death in her car). It was unclear how she escaped.

“We’re still trying to piece the timeline together,” New York State Trooper Jack Keller said.

Renz was captured near the wooded area after the driver who found the girl told a 911 dispatcher he saw a man running from the scene.

SYRACUSE -- Officials released the mug shot of David Renz, 29, on Thursday, giving the public its first look at the man accused of killing a Liverpool school librarian and raping a child in Clay last Friday.

The Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police said in an email that they did not release a photo earlier as it was "critical to preserve the integrity of any identification procedure performed in this case."

Their reasoning behind keeping the photo out of the public eye is so puzzling to me. This guy was arrested back in January for having child porn on computer, there should have been a mugshot from that arrest as well.
