Zahra Baker, a murdered child
I haven't been back or posted in a while, but after reading the search warrants myself - unsealed this afternoon - details in the case have taken a somewhat surprising turn. Yes, the details are just as gruesome as we all feared, but there's a new twist that has arisen, that may explain why Adam Baker hasn't been implicated or arrested.
New twist No. 2, the memorial service officiallY became "private" as of about 4 p.m. EST Tuesday.

Ten-year-old Zahra Baker may have been raped before she was murdered, and her dismembered body then concealed in a bed comforter and car cover, and discarded in a Dumpster behind a grocery store, according to court documents released this afternoon.

The documents don't reveal how the girl died, but they suggest that acquaintances of Zahra's stepmother may have played a role in the girl's death. The records detail for the first time Elisa Baker's account of what was done with Zahra's body, and offer a glimpse of evidence police have uncovered.

In a statement to police, a source relays information that two men may have raped Zahra. When asked if they killed her, the source said "they might have hit her in the head."

The documents do not explain that, if someone else killed the girl, why the Bakers would conceal her death.

Judge Nathaniel Poovey ordered that the previously-sealed documents be released this afternoon.

The documents also show:

-- Elisa Baker's attorney, Lisa Dubs, told an investigator that latex gloves were used while Zahra's body was dismembered. Dubs also said investigators might find remains in the bathtub drain.

-- Through her attorney, Elisa Baker said she and her husband Adam Baker -- Zahra's father -- dumped a mattress and box springs at a trash dump in Granite Falls.

-- Elisa Baker directed investigators to the Fox Ridge apartments in Hickory. Through her attorney, she admitted that she and Adam Baker wrapped Zahra's prosthetic leg in a white trash bag and threw it in the apartment Dumpster.

-- On Oct. 10, a dog trained in recovery of bodies gave a positive alert for the presence of human remains in or on two vehicles at the Baker home in Hickory.

Warrants: Elisa Baker gave details of Zahra's dismemberment
Elisa Baker told investigators where to look for the latex gloves and trash bags used during the dismemberment of her step-daughter Zahra, according to search warrants made public Tuesday by court order.

The gloves, she said, "should be located" in the bathroom of the Baker home in Hickory, while the trash bags used to store body parts were put in the kitchen cabinet, according to the warrants.

Through her attorney, Lisa Dubbs, Baker told authorities that blood and pieces of bone "may be located" in the drain trap of the bathroom, the warrant states.

The kitchen and bathroom drain traps were among the items taken from the Baker home.

A polygraph test conducted on Elisa Baker on Oct. 9 showed deception on three questions. Baker was asked three relevant questions: Did you hurt Zahra? Do you know if anyone has done harm to that child? Do you know the person that wrote that ransom note? The results indicated deception on all three questions.

From the Hickory daily record

**I can't find anything else that backs it up but I got a message on Facebook from The Zahra Project" saying ti was cancelled - good luck making it private after having the details announced for the last few days - they'll be lucky no one lynches him -

it is my opinion that the authorities are going to have to arrest adam baker on some charge now that these documents are public.
OR they are waiting for Grand Jury.
he might be safer in jail anyway.

"We are not offering any additional comments on what was released in the court documents," said Deputy Chief of Police Clyde Deal. "We will file the charges whenever all the evidence work and the rest of the investigation reaches the proper point."

Charlotte Observer

NEWTON In stark detail, court documents released Tuesday disclose new allegations in the death of 10-year-old Zahra Baker, the Hickory girl whose plight appears to be more disturbing than previously revealed.

The records don't say how Zahra died or why no one has been charged in the girl's death.

But one unnamed source reported to police that the girl may have been raped by two men and that they may have physically assaulted her, the documents say. At least one of the men was acquainted with Zahra's stepmother.

The documents also say police were told that Zahra's body was dismembered, placed in trash bags, and discarded.

The records represent the most detailed look at what may have happened to the Hickory girl, whose disappearance has captured worldwide attention for weeks.

Documents provide a grim narrative from her stepmother, Elisa Baker, describing what was done with Zahra's body after she died.

Since Zahra was reported missing Oct. 9, speculation has focused on what role, if any, Elisa Baker and the girl's father, Adam Baker, might have played in the girl's fate.

Both Adam and Elisa Baker have denied any wrongdoing in the case.

The unnamed source said Zahra, at a time unspecified in the document, had been at a beige block house in Burke County with two men. The source, who got his information from talking to someone else, reported that Elisa Baker came to the house and saw Zahra with blood on her lower body, and that the men had raped her, according to the documents.

The source said he asked the person he was talking to if the men at the house had killed Zahra, and he was told "they might have hit her in the head," one document says.

The source also was told that one of the men said "he had done something very bad and needed to leave town."

Police went to the house where the men were living and spoke to one of them. He acknowledged that he knew Zahra Baker but didn't think she had ever been to his house, one document says. He agreed to accompany investigators to the police department to be interviewed.

The two men couldn't be reached by the Observer late Tuesday. But one of the men told Observer news partner WCNC-TV that to his knowledge, Zahra Baker has never been in his house. He said he was questioned for 10 hours about the allegation and passed a lie detector test.

Hickory Police declined to say late Tuesday whether they are investigating the two men as suspects in the killing and alleged rape of Zahra.

"We are not offering any additional comments on what was released in the court documents," said Deputy Chief of Police Clyde Deal. "We will file the charges whenever all the evidence work and the rest of the investigation reaches the proper point."

Also on Tuesday, the State Bureau of Investigation's crime lab released a report to Hickory Police on evidence it was sent to analyze, a spokeswoman said. She would not divulge details about the analysis.

WSOC report re: warrants---->

HICKORY, N.C. -- More than 100 pages of search warrants related to the investigation into Zahra Baker’s disappearance and death were made public Tuesday, revealing disturbing details in the case.

Zahra Baker’s stepmother, Elisa Baker, led police to at least three locations in the investigation, the warrants say. She told police through her lawyer that she and her husband, Adam Baker, threw Zahra’s prosthetic leg in a Dumpster outside of Fox Ridge Apartments in Hickory, according to the warrants. The prosthetic leg was wrapped in a white trash bag.

Elisa and Adam Baker also left a mattress and box spring that had belonged to Zahra at a dump on Congress Street in Granite Falls, the warrants say.

In addition, the warrants say Elisa Baker directed police to a Dumpster behind the Fair Value Grocery Store in Hudson. A car cover and bed comforter were used to conceal and transport Zahra’s body parts there, the warrants say.

Elisa Baker’s lawyer also told investigators to check the drain of the bathtub at the Bakers’ Hickory home for blood and bone fragments, according to the warrants. The documents also say latex gloves were used while Zahra’s body was dismembered.

Rape allegations are also revealed in the documents. Investigators searched a home in Hildebran after receiving information from an unnamed source that 10-year-old Zahra may have been raped there, according to the warrants. The documents allege that two men raped the girl and that one of those men had some type of relationship with Elisa Baker.

Eyewitness News reporter Alan Cavanna contacted one of those men on Tuesday night. James Young denied the allegations, saying he was a family friend of the Bakers, but that he never saw Zahra at his home. He added that he was questioned by police for 10 hours and passed a lie detector test.

The other man named in the warrant is Young's cousin, Sammy.

Young said at one point, Elisa Baker and Sammy had a relationship, but said he doesn’t think his cousin had anything to do with Zahra’s disappearance.

“I can’t say for sure that he didn't, but my mind can't wrap around the fact that he would do something like that,” he said.

Eyewitness News attempted to contact Sammy for comment but he hung up the phone.

The warrants also say that a polygraph test done on Elisa Baker showed deception when police asked whether she hurt Zahra. The test also showed deception when investigators asked if Elisa Baker knew if anyone had done harm to Zahra and whether she knew who wrote the ransom note that was found the day Zahra was reported missing.

In addition, one warrant mentions a report made to the Department of Social Services alleging that Elisa Baker had physically abused Zahra. The report, which says the girl had a black eye due to the alleged abuse, was made with the Caldwell County DSS and then transferred to the Catawba County DSS.
