Children Who Kill

How do you fix a kid who is so broken? Chances are he'll just be contained so he can't do any more damage.

Endia Martin, 14 -- shot to death by 14-year-old in Chicago. RIP.

Endia and her good friend were fighting over a boy, on Facebook.

The good friend (an unnamed 14-year-old honor roll student) confronted Endia and Endia's 16-year-old friend as they were walking home from school on Monday.

The 14-year-old honor roll student shot Endia in the back and shot Endia's friend in the arm. Endia died; the 16-year-old was rushed to the hospital and she's in good condition.

The shooter is in juvenile detention charged with premeditated murder.

Donnell Flora ^, the shooter's 25-year-old uncle, is also charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. He was reportedly shot some years back and is confined to a wheelchair. The POS took the bus to the spot where his niece planned to confront Endia and gave her the .38 caliber used in the murder.

When the shooter first attempted to fire the gun at Endia, it jammed and 'someone' fixed it for her.

A 17-year-old male is also in custody. He allegedly tried to hide the gun after the shooting. He is charged with illegally having a gun and then trying to get rid of it after shooting. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday. (I don't know his relation to the shooter and her uncle.) The murder weapon had recently been stolen from the legal owner's car.

Police say that a witness recorded the murder on cell phone video.

If LE doesn't charge the 14-year-old shooter as an adult, she must be released on or before her 21st birthday.

I never had a single thought like that when I was 14. How the hell do you rehabilitate people like that.

I don't know if it's possible to rehabilitate her, but if it is, it might be more likely with her being incarcerated than with the POS adults in her world. At least one of them knew of the thoughts in her head (or put them there?) and prompted the murder.

UPDATE: There have now been 5 arrests made in the case. Yesterday there were three people charged -- the 14 year-old shooter, the 25 year-old uncle, the 17 year-old boy who dumped the murder weapon. Today, a 34 year-old man and a 32 year-old woman were charged as well.

Turns out, the murder weapon wasn't stolen after all. The man to whom the gun was registered, 34 year-old Robert James, illegally sold it to someone else in November (I don't know who) and lied about it being stolen. He's been arrested for that crime.

Also arrested, 32 year-old Vandetta Redwood. She was there when the confrontation went down (don't know why or her relationship to the parties yet); she failed to help or call police. She lied to police and said that she wasn't there. She's been charged with felony mob action and felony obstruction of justice.

The 14 year-old shooter shot Endia four times in the back. Four effin' times. Her adult uncle accompanied her to the confrontation, gave her the gun, apparently unjammed it for her, and watched her kill another little girl over a boy. An adult woman was there and did nothing to try to diffuse the situation and left the scene without helping Endia or calling police. Unbelievable.

IMO, the shooter is responsible for her own actions. Still, it's tragic and maddening that she was encouraged and enabled to murder by at least one adult family member.

14-YEAR-OLD CHARGED WITH RAPE AND MURDER OF 11-YEAR-OLD NEIGHBOR -- NORTH CAROLINA

McKenzie Sessoms ^, RIP, was found unresponsive in her home on Hairr Lane by a family member on the morning of Sept. 6, 2013.

Sessoms lived at the home with her father and siblings.

Antonio Trey Jones ^ , who turned 15-years-old on Thursday, is the suspect -- as confirmed by his grandfather Howard Jones.

"If he done it, I'm glad they got him. That's all I can say," said Jones.

The teen lived with his grandfather and his father next to the Sessoms' home. Another family member said Trey had spoken in a vulgar way to McKenzie and had been banned from the girl's home.

At a Wednesday news conference, Sheriff Thornton thanked the family for their patience during the eight months it took for detectives to collect enough evidence to make an arrest. Thornton said it was a particularly difficult case to solve.

Sessoms' grandmother Cathy Starke thanked investigators on behalf of the entire family. "Thank God they've done their job, and they've done it well," she said. "Now just keep us in your prayers."

Starke also spoke about the suspect. "I don't know what made him do it, but I hope that by him doing it, he realizes that he's really messed up his life as well as taking McKenzie away from us," said Starke.

Recently, Jones moved to Franklin County to be with his mother, and it's there where authorities arrested him, which sparked pain for now a second family in the horrible tragedy.

"He's just as sweet as he can be," said family friend Rhonda Wright. "Trey is being accused of terrible, terrible things that I just don't see him mentally capable of doing at all."

Wright is a close family friend, who described herself as like an aunt to Jones. She said Wednesday that Jones is in special education. Though a teenager, but has the mind of a younger child, and has epilepsy.

Wright said when Jones came home from school Monday Sampson County detectives interrogated him for more than three hours without an adult.

"He told his mother yesterday they confused him," said Wright. "He was very confused. He said they turned some things around that he said."

Following that interview, Wright says Jones became upset -- repeating he didn't do it, and threatening to hurt himself.

The Sampson County sheriff said they have DNA evidence linking Jones to the crime. It's evidence his family plans to fight as he heads to arraignment.

Jones is currently being held in a detention center in New Hanover County.

If that DNA evidence was found on or in McKenzie's body, it's gonna be tough for his defense attorneys and family to sell his claims of innocence.

Hoping that LE taped their interview with the boy prior to his arrest.

Norfolk, Va. – A smart and talented Norview High School 10th-grader admitted in court today he killed his parents a week before Christmas because he was weary of their seemingly routine punishments, “like my dad taking away my iPod and stuff.”

Parker, 16, was scheduled to be tried in adult court but instead entered a guilty plea this week.

Snip:
Vincent Parker attacked his mother Carol as she emerged from an upstairs bathroom in their Bland Street home. He admitted to police he doused his mother with pepper spray, stabbed her in the eye, and then beat her in the face and head with a baseball bat and a crowbar “until she stopped breathing.” A medical examiner identified 25 separate smashes and stabs to Carol Parker’s neck, face and head.

When Vincent’s father Wayne Parker came home, Vincent struck him with a crowbar and stabbed him several times. Wayne Parker lived long enough to tell police what happened. After first trying to say his father was the aggressor, Vincent admitted he killed his parents. Vincent was Carol and Wayne’s only child.

Defense attorney Emily Munn told the judge a psychiatric evaluation showed Vincent was both sane and intelligent. Even though Vincent is being sentenced as an adult, Munn told the judge she is going to ask the court to consider letting him serve at least part of his sentence in a juvenile facility. He could face decades in prison if he’s sentenced to the maximum for both murders. His grandfather is hoping for a much shorter punishment.

I hope Parker's grandfather's hope doesn't become reality, personally. This kid planned the murders, ambushed his parents, and killed them in an extremely painful manner. He needs to stay behind bars, IMO.

Lock him up & throw away the key. I don't care a wit about his age, it's enough to know that he's old enough to know better and to fully understand his actions.

12-Year-Old Charged as Adult for Murder of 9-Year-Old; Michigan

This one is just terribly sad, all the way around.

[Image: stabbing-collage.jpg?w=370&h=204&crop=1]
Jamarion Lawhorn, 12......Connor Verkerke, 9 (RIP).

Last week, Jamarion took a bunch of pills, grabbed an 8-inch steak knife and went off to kill someone. (He later told the court that he'd wanted to kill someone for about a year.)

He walked about a half mile to the Pinebrook Village Mobile Home Park playground where he played briefly on the jungle gym with 9-year-old Michael ‘Connor’ Verkerke, Connor's little brother and one of their friends. Jamarion had never met the other kids previously.

Then, Jamarion pulled his knife from the sand and stabbed Connor in the back repeatedly. Connor's little brother helped him to walk to their home where Connor collapsed in the front yard (he later died at the hospital and his little brother is said to be understandably traumatized).

Meanwhile, immediately after the stabbing, Jamarion walked to a neighboring home and asked to use the phone. He called 911 and told the dispatcher that he'd just killed someone and, 'I want to die. I don’t want to be on this earth anymore. Please pick me up.' He also reportedly told the neighbor at the home that he'd taken a bunch of pills and nobody loved him.

Jamarion's lawyer advised him to plead not guilt of murder and requested that the boy have a psych eval. Jamarion told the juvenile court judge that he understood the charges against him and that he killed Connor because he (Jamarion) was bad and he was always doing stupid things.

Under Michigan law, Jamarion could be given a 'blended' sentence if he is convicted, which would keep him in a juvenile detention facility until he is 21. After that, a judge would determine whether he should be released or sent to adult prison.

A GoFundMe page was established to help Connor's mom pay for the funeral expenses.

All In the Family

Depressing.

Two sisters, aged 15 and 11, shot their 16-year-old brother to death in White Springs, Florida last night.

The children's parents — Keith Kornegay, 37, and Misty Kornegay, 33 — were away for the night. They were arrested Tuesday, charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm and are accused of failing to properly supervise their children.

The older girl says her brother, Damien Kornegay, beat her and that she was locked in her room with just a bucket for urination. She says her little sister let her out of her room when her brother went to sleep, got the guns, and then the older girl shot her brother in his sleep.

The girls are in detention. Children arrested for crimes and treated as juveniles can be held in detention for a maximum of 30 days under Florida law. A 3-year-old was in the home at the time of the murder; relation unknown.

The Police say they had been to the family's residence on three previous occasions for reports of property damage, a civil matter and a juvenile issue, which was turned over to DCF and was "unfounded."

The two girls appeared in court Wednesday for a detention hearing and were ordered detained for the next 30 days, during which time the state attorney will make a determination as to whether they will be charged as juveniles or adults. One of the girls is being held in a detention center in Ocala while the other is being held in Gainsville.

No murder charge for 15-year-old girl in brother's slaying

GAINSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A 15-year-old north Florida girl who authorities say fatally shot her 16-year-old brother after years of abuse at home pleaded no contest on Thursday to felony burglary and will receive probation and counseling.

The girl's probation will last until her 19th birthday, and is contingent upon her participation in counseling, and testifying truthfully in the case of her parents, who face felony child abuse charges, Third Circuit State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister said.

"This child has the best chance at a normal adult life by receiving the therapy and education she needs and residing in the setting of her current foster home," he said.

The girl and her 11-year-old sister were initially arrested on suspicion of murder after the Jan. 5 shooting in Lake City. No charges were filed against the younger sister.

The Associated Press is not naming members of the family because of the girls' ages and because of abuse allegations.

On Jan. 5, the girls and their 3-year-old sister were left by their parents in the care of their brother. The parents were away on a work-related truck drive.

Police say the brother locked the elder sister in her room, but when he fell asleep, she persuaded the 11-year-old to let her out.

She went outside and cut out the air conditioner of her parents' locked bedroom window to retrieve a pistol, which she used to shoot her brother in the neck.

Documents show that the elder girl suffered years of abuse, including being locked in her bedroom for days regularly with only a blanket and a bucket to use the bathroom.

In addition, documents showed that she had been sexually abused by her uncle, who was convicted in 2010. Authorities also said the children's mother had discovered the siblings having sex in 2011, but after an investigation by child welfare officials, no one was charged.

Siegmeister said all of the family's history and circumstances were taken into consideration in the decision not to pursue more serious criminal charges.

"This case is a tragedy to all those involved: the deceased, the two arrested children, as well as their 3-year-old sister who has been separated from them both. Further incarceration ... serves no deterrent, rehabilitative nor other societal interest."

^ What are your thoughts about the sentencing, Six?

I have mixed feelings.

If the teen girl was abused and neglected by her parents and the older brother whom she killed, and she shows signs of confusion and trauma related to the murder, I can see how treatment and counseling are probably better options than more punishment and confinement. I wish her well.

On the other hand, whether or not it's a result of having been violated and neglected by her own family -- if this girl is so cold as to be able to shoot her older brother and leave her 3-year-old sister home alone in the same room with his bleeding corpse (and is unemotional about it), I'm skeptical that she's treatable and not a danger to society.

I am good with what she got, including the counselling. At least that way there is a chance she can get fixed.
That poor kid got dealt a pretty shitty hand and I can easily see that she would have thought it would Never end, or she would end up dead.
Parents didn't give a shit what happened to her, or who was doing it.
As to her actions immediately following the killing, Its pretty hard to blame her for being way weirded out, She just killed her primary tormentor.
Getting the fuck out was probably the only thing on her mind, not stepping into the roll of caregiver to her other 2 siblings. Its a wonder she isn't completely gone over the edge.
I don't think it necessarily follows that she will be a danger to the rest of the world, Counselling instead of jail and getting away from the douchbag parents should go a long way to getting her head back together.

The awful truth about women who face sexual systemic abuse is that they are so inured to it culturally they can become numb and therefore have a chance to move past it. She can "get fixed" if she is mentally strong enough to let go of it. Women in places like India and the middle east are proof that a person can become used to all sorts of horrific conditions.

The 11-year-old undoubtedly saw a lot and could use some counseling too. I wonder if she and the 15-year-old are in the same foster home or not.

Anyway, it's too bad they were left in the family horror house for so long after protective services had them on their radar.

But, if they're with good decent foster families and have good counselors, I agree that there's hope they'll do well and stay out of trouble.

RIP Madyson Middleton, 8 ^

I started following this local case shortly after Madyson went missing on Sunday night and wished for a different outcome.

Maddy lived with her mom at an affordable loft complex for artists and their families in Santa Cruz (an artsy town on the California coast).

She was captured on surveillance video riding her scooter in the complex's courtyard in the 5 pm hour. Then, she just seemingly disappeared. Her mom called 911 about an hour later.

Police, residents, some of the local homeless population, and nearby community members searched the complex and surrounding areas. Scent dogs and helicopters were part of the search effort, but they had no luck locating Maddy.

Then, the next day (Monday) some officers went back to the complex to search again. An officer noticed one the resident children who'd helped in the search and lived next to Maddy lingering around a recycle dumpster. The officer looked deep inside and found the body of Maddy.

The (very large) neighbor boy, ^ 15-year-old suspect Adrian Gonzales, was questioned and has been charged as an adult with lying in wait before kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing 8-year-old Madyson ‘Maddy’ Middleton.

Gonzales is said to have lured his friend Maddy to his apartment and used duct tape and possibly a knife in the assault.

Residents of the art complex described him as shy, quiet, polite and skilled with a yo-yo. They also say he asked tons of questions and was very involved during the search efforts.

His now-defunct Instagram account paints a portrait of a disturbed young man, possibly suffering from depression, who may have been harboring suicidal thoughts.

'Wears all black to try and look powerful and hide the crippling anxiety,' he wrote of himself in one post. 'Towards the future and the constant worry that I’ll never find someone who loves me.'

The last message appeared on the page Monday, the day Maddy was discovered dead. The post included a video showing what appeared to be Gonzalez's fingers on a keyboard playing the song 'Mad World' by the band Tears for Fears.

The clip was accompanied by a post that included lyrics from the song’s refrain: 'The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I ever had.'

Mad World famously appeared on the soundtrack of the 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko, which tells the story of a troubled teenager who is tormented by visions of a giant rabbit that manipulates him into committing a series of crimes.

Very sad for Maddy's family. She was a very friendly, creative and bubbly girl, by all accounts.

I''m glad Gonzales was caught quickly and is locked up. I don't care if he ends up in prison or a mental facility, as long as he stays there for life.
