It's not about what to do with disabled folks, it's about preventing it. Eighty percent of mental retardation is avoidable. The lady I currently work with has Severe Cerebral Palsy..because prior to birth the cord was wrapped around her neck causing loos of oxygen..and her CP, as well as some learning difficulties....it just takes her a while longer to learn and comprehend things. BUT...she has graduated high school AND has a 2 year college degree.
So, tell me...I would like to know just how her disability is the fault of her parents????? And please do not say you do not mean her...you insinuate that ALL disabled people are that way because of the fault of others.

My mates brother Joseph has spina bifida, he can't really do much for himself and he can say about four words, he can't work but he manages to enjoy a decent quality of life, but using your rational its off to Siberia for him right?

Those are organic disabilities. They are not preventable. If you will read what I wrote, you will see I was referring to familial disabilities (caused in infancy AFTER birth).

I also spend years working with people with disabilities. Many disabilities were caused by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE), Familial Retardation (COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE), Shaken Baby Syndrome (not even going there, that should have a death sentence attached), and other forms of completely preventable causes.

MOST, about 80%, of intellectual disabilities can be prevented. I am well aware of the difference between birth defects/genetic defects and other forms of disability.

People don't want to talk about it. They just want to lump all disabilities into the same group and give sympathy. That doesn't help. Our resources are being stretched because of the PREVENTABLE disabilities that complete for funding along with birth defects and other organic forms of disabling conditions.

Do you think, QB, that people with moderate intellectual abilities should be allowed to raise children?

Again, from my experience, "Getting disabled people out into the workforce" is easier said than done. Be those disabilities cognititive or physical. Many places just do not want to be bothered taking the extra effort required to give the folks the training they may need. And while there are workshops..allowing them to assemble things, or other various tasks, the pay is piecework, and probably guys in prison make more. I saw people I worked with bring home "paychecks" of about $11 for a weeks work..and be very proud of that pay...but really...Would any of us be happy with an $11 paycheck for 30 hours of work???

Read this again, QB. You will find you let emotion overcome reason. I never said ALL disabilities. I have more sense than to generalize, like some others.

I know I don't hold a popular opinion. It places blame. And it should. Why do we allow kids to suffer for no good reason? How fun is it to sit in a classroom all day, year after year, and not understand a damn thing because your mom didn't spend enough time with you as a baby stimulating your intellect? Why do we let this happen? WHY?
