The fiscal cliff
(01-04-2013, 07:44 PM)username Wrote: WTH? Have you heard the craziness of printing a trillion dollar coin to avert a debt ceiling debate??

People have lost their fucking minds.

On the bright side...NASCAR hit the lottery with the fiscal cliff deal.

That's all that really matters now, isn't it?

That pushed my boss over the edge. She hadn't heard about it yet & I am truly sorry I was the one to tell her.

I can't hear my TV at full volume when the nascars 3 miles away are playing.

What are they going to do? make 'em louder?

In twenty years there'll be a new generation of the middle aged deaf. Maybe they'll be able to sue the owners and Obama.

I might go deaf from 3 miles away.

Tax cuts extended for those earning under 400k (over 450k for families), okay. But, putting off spending cut details and any chance of implementation until next month?

It worries me that we're seeing month-to-month management of this country's finances/budget in any context, but especially in a deficit situation. I hope both sides are working together regarding ceiling negotiations and have some genuine bi-partisan options prepared for consideration for next month. Yeah, I think that the chances of that hope being a reality are slim to none. Just "none", actually.

On a somewhat related and slightly more positive note:

December’s jobs report showed a holding pattern. A gain of 155,000 jobs is moderate and exactly what was forecasted, while unemployment stayed constant at 7.8 percent. Almost crawling, but at least unemployment isn't increasing...

Yep, the recovery is underway!!! And look at how fast we are recovering!!

It's laughable and pathetic.

The fiscal cliff deal included a tax break for algae growers. I've got some algae in my fish tank; I'm deducting that shit!

I don't usually laugh when I read Politico, but these poll results that they released today cracked me up.

Overall, 85 percent of the surveyed American voters had an unfavorable opinion of Congress, while just nine percent viewed it favorably.

I. THINGS THAT AMERICANS LIKE BETTER THAN CONGRESS:

• Root canals (56 percent of surveyed American voters preferred the painful procedure to Congress, which only got 32 percent of the vote)
• NFL replacement refs (56–29)
• Head lice (67-19)
• Nickelback (39-32)
• Colonoscopies (58-31)
• Washington DC political pundits (37-34)
• Traffic jams (56-34)
• Cockroaches (45-43)
• Donald Trump (44-42)
• Genghis Khan (41-37)

II. THINGS THAT AMERICANS LIKE EVEN LESS THAN THEY DO CONGRESS:

• The Kardashians (49 percent preferred Congress to the popular family which only managed to grasp 36 percent)
• Fidel Castro (54-32)
• Communism (57-23)
• North Korea (61-26)
• Ebola virus (53-25)
• Lindsay Lohan (45-41)
• John Edwards (45-29)
• Playground bullies (43-38)
• Gonorrhea (53-28)

The poll was conducted from Jan 3-6, surveying 830 voters. It has a margin of error of +/-3.4 percentage points.

No matter how you look at it, always good to see the humor in the absurd.

Plus, gotta love the old cartoons characters.

If every American had 0 debt the country could quite possibly explode.

Hard to imagine if it would explode, implode, or level out. If we'd quit stalin and give up the need to acquire wealth and luxury assets (like fine lenin), we could maybe trotsky away from this mess and into an even playing field for all, with no personal debt or taxes. Smiley_emoticons_wink

I’m just playing and trying to keep smiling through this economic cluster fuck; I’ll take Capitalism over Communism or any other political/economic model any day.

Since March 1962, Congress has raised the debt limit 76 times, according to the Congressional Research Service. Eleven of those times occurred in the past decade.

How high is the debt ceiling now? The ceiling is currently set at $16.394 trillion. The country's borrowing hit that mark on Dec. 31.

As a result, Treasury can't borrow any new money in the markets (although it still is allowed to rollover existing debt). So it has begun to use "extraordinary measures" to temporarily stave off the risk that the country will default on any of its obligations.

The remainder of the short top-level article at below link is a good overview of what could happen if the ceiling isn't increased by March 31st (including the trillion dollar coin option).

If Jack Lew is confirmed as the new Treasury Secretary, he'll have his hands full straight out of the gate.

They need to be working on getting us our excellent credit rating back. I've never understood how they allowed us to lose it in the first place.

I've seen some good political cartoons spoofing the debt ceiling from all angles.

So . . .

If you receive a paycheck (with deductions), have you noticed an increase in fed payroll withholdings?

Just curious.
