A retired Tampa Police Captain was arrested for shooting a man and his wife after an apparent argument over texting while at a Wesley Chapel movie theater.
I wish they would stop letting angry borderline psychopaths carry guns around with them.
This is the shooter, Curtis Reeves, 71 ^. He wore a bullet-proof vest to his arraignment on charges of second degree murder.
Friends and neighbors say he was a calm and friendly guy and that he must have "snapped"; no indications that he had any mental illness or psychopathy. What he did have was a gun in a gun-free zone and what appears to be a very short fuse.
The details emerging: 43-year-old Chad Oulson was texting during the previews before the movie, he and his wife were sitting in the row below Reeves and his wife. Reeves got pissed and started mouthing off to Oulson.
Reeves went to tell on Oulson to theater management, who he either couldn't find or who didn't care (not clear).
So, Reeves went back into the auditorium alone and started again with Oulson. Oulson told Reeves that he was texting his young daughter's babysitter. According to witnesses, Reeves kept getting more irate and at some point during Reeves' tirade, Oulson threw some popcorn at the retired cop.
Reeves now says that he was in fear for his life at that point (shocking, I know) and claims that Oulson threw a punch at him before Reeves pulled a .380 semi-automatic and shot the husband/father/former Navy officer/motocross enthusiast to death right in front of his wife (whose hand was shot trying to protect her husband). Reeves says he was "standing his ground".
Reeves's claims are bullshit, say witnesses and police, who assert that Oulson did not physically assault Reeves at all - no attempted punch, just a popcorn toss.
Well, the judge heard it all today. Judge Tepper said there's nothing to indicate any physical altercation took place and that throwing popcorn does not equal pulling a gun. Good - a rational Florida judge.
Judge Tepper denied bond. Rightfully so, IMO.
What a senseless death.

Roswell school shooting: At least 2 students hurt, suspect in custody
Two kids have been injured during shooting at Roswell, NM, school. (KTNV)
ROSWELL, N.M.—
A shooter opened fire at a middle school in Roswell, New Mexico, Tuesday morning, wounding at least two students, according to local police and hospital reports.
According to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, authorities responded at 8:11 a.m. to reports of shots fired at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell.
The Roswell Police Department, through its Facebook page, quickly confirmed that a suspect was in custody, but police did not release any other details.
There will be a press conference at 1 p.m. local time.
Two students were being flown to Lubbock, Texas, said University Medical Center Health System spokesman Eric Finley. A 14-year-old boy is said to be in critical condition and was being taken by helicopter. A 13-year-old girl taken by plane, has been upgraded to serious condition.
There also were earlier reports of two students taken via ambulance to a local hospital.
Kathy Sigala, a parent, told Roswell television station KOB, an NBC affiliate, that she was made aware of the shooting by a phone call from an office colleague.
"It was scary, it was freaky," Sigala told the station. "We just can't believe that it would happen here."
A woman, who asked not be identified, waiting to pick up her 14-year-old son told a Los Angeles Times reporter at the scene that her son called about 7:50 a.m. from a locked room in the school office. She was told that teachers and fellow students were inside.
All were safe, she said. According to the boy, a person with a shotgun was in the school and was tackled and caught, the woman said.
A dispatcher with the Roswell police said the initial report came from the Chaves County Sheriff's Office, but officials there could not be reached early Tuesday.
The Roswell Independent School District has not acknowledged the incident on their web site. A recorded voice message on the school's phone instructed parents to pick up their children at a nearby location.
Roswell is located about 200 miles southeast of Albuquerque.
The incident was the second at a middle school in three months. In October, a 12-year-old boy opened fire with a handgun at his middle school in Sparks, Nevada, killing a teacher and wounding two other students before shooting himself to death.
It comes amid a national debate on gun control, after a gunman shot to death 20 students and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut in December, 2012. Following that attack, President Barack Obama called for sweeping new gun control measures.
Crazy shit, Six.
Turns out the suspect in custody is a 12 year-old student - again.
The two seriously wounded students are a 13 year-old girl and an 11 year-old boy. Earlier conflicting reports cited his age as 14 and 12-years-old.
Information from the nurses treating the boy, who's in critical condition, indicates he was the shooter's target, hospital spokesman Eric Finley said.
Police are investigating. Some talk that the shooter may have been bullied, just talk at this point, but it doesn't matter to me even if he was.
Really hoping that the two kids who were shot pull through.

What a nut job. That is weird he is wearing a bullet proof vest because I noticed that the other inmates are not wearing them.

What I said would happen has come to pass.
Nearly all the shooters since Zimmerman have pleaded “I feared for my life!” If its good enough for George to walk why not try it?
A popcorn toss? Oh yes killing someone over that is a proportionate response! There are probably millions of armed Americans out there carrying pistols thinking to themselves “if anyone gets in my grill today I'm gonna put a cap in their ass and just say I feared for my life like George did”

I'll bet it really is something to live in a country where if you are a kid going to school being shot is an occupational hazard.

Update - New Mexico Middle School Shooting
Police are investigating reports that the 12 year-old shooter (a boy whose identity has not been released in the media) warned some students not to go to school that day.
Berrando Middle School - Roswell, New Mexico
Police have executed three search warrants: for the seventh-grade suspect's school locker, the bag he brought to the school and his home.
"We've got the individual we believe is responsible in state police custody," New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas during a news conference Tuesday night. What police don't yet have is a motive.
Student Jordan Moody, who described himself as "friendly" with the suspected shooter, said he wasn't aware of any bullying or any other reason for the shooting. "He just ran in there and just shot, really," Jordan said on CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday.
Police said the 12-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been released, entered the middle school gym, pulled a shotgun out of a bag and opened fire on students waiting for school to start. Two were wounded.
"We've confirmed that it is a 20-gauge shotgun," Kassetas said. "That the wood stock was sawed off."
Both of the wounded students were transferred from a New Mexico hospital to one in Lubbock, Texas.
A 13-year-old girl, Kendal Sanders, was in stable condition Tuesday night following surgery, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said. Kendal suffered injuries to her right shoulder. She is now reportedly in "stable" condition - good news.
A boy (identity not released), 11, was in critical condition, and underwent two surgeries. He suffered injuries to the side of his face and neck, the governor said.
The attack lasted about 10 seconds. It might have gone on longer, authorities say, were it not for the actions of a social studies teacher.
One teacher, John Masterson - an 8 th grade social studies teacher and track/soccer coach - walked up to the shooter and persuaded him to put the gun down.
"Mr. Masterson ... was a hero ... who stood there and allowed a gun to be pointed right at him," the governor said at a vigil Tuesday evening, "and to talk down that young boy to drop the gun so that there would be no more young kids hurt."
"It was a harrowing experience," Masterson told a reporter. "All I can say was the staff there did a great job."

Gonna be interesting to see how he's charged and hear his plea/defense; the alleged shooter is years too young to be charged as an adult - even if his 11 year-old shooting victim dies.
A lot of juvenile hearings and records are sealed, so not sure how much information will be available on the legal front.
This may be another case where, even if found guilty in juvenile court, the shooter will be released before he's 25 years old.

I knew right from wrong and the consequences of death and killing before I was twelve.
The two ten year old twats who tortured, sexually assaulted and killed James Bulger knew exactly what they were doing as well.

When these things happen "the shooter" is usually someone that is percieved as "normal" until more is dug up on them. Some parents, not all are happy to put their kid in a room with video games and let that do the parenting. They never learn right from wrong.

Any child that goes to school will be taught right from wrong I don't care how much Grand Theft Auto 5 they play.
I also find it bewlidering that some people seem to be more concerned with virtual firearms in violent video games than unsecured real firearms in the home.

There was a shooting by my house yesterday. A sheriff was after a guy on foot and the guy ran to the unoccupied cruiser and jumped in. The other cops chased him down and ended up shooting him across the street from our Sonic! The road was closed down for hours and traffic was a nightmare. I didn't think stuff like that happened in Woodstock.

I drove right by the exit for Woodstock this past summer.
I asked my wife, "should we go see it?" and she replied that there was nothing to see so we skipped it.
I think we're heading back to Albany this summer.

I'm curious at to how the 12 year-old got a hold of a sawed-off shotgun. Parents? Bought it illegally? Straw purchaser? Stole it?
No time to research state specific laws right now, but did read a quick blurb indicating that sawed-off shotguns are legal depending on barrel size and there are some restrictions and ambiguities regarding their legal ownership in various states.
If anyone has quick access to the caveats (in and/or out of New Mexico) and can post them, much appreciated. Otherwise, I'll look around later tonight.
