Check, protect your computer from worm Conficker

March 31, 2009

You may not see any outward signs that your computer is infected because the worm tries to keep a low profile. But here are some tips to checking your computer is OK -- and protecting it as best you can:

Windows' account lockout policies are tripped, which might make it difficult to log into your PC.

Some key parts of Windows are disabled, such as Automatic Updates; Windows Defender; and Error Reporting.

Slow network access and Internet surfing.

You're unable to access certain Web sites related to computer security.

Use a multilayer security software system with updated firewalls, if you surf the Internet.

Keep all of your security applications and operating systems updated.

Perform an anti-virus or anti-spyware scan every day.

Disable theauto play functions on your computer.

Monitor your operating system audit logs and your network traffic.

To read more about the worm, go to Microsoft Corp.'s Web site at microsoft.com.

To download Microsoft's software for disabling Conficker go here.

I had a freakin virus on Sunday. I had to download a new cleaner thingy. A friend of mine who's hubs is a computer geek and he told me what to get. I don't know if it was the same virus as this one JB but it sucked all the same.

It's been all over the news here and I'm downloading it just to be safe. Can't be total bullshit if Microsoft has a way to kill it. I saved the program you posted and am running it now, and I"ll run it again tomorrow, just to be sure.

My Mom - a computer guru - said to disconnect all internet connections tonight as added protection. Thanks for putting this up, JB.

What if I am wireless? I usually turn my laptop off at night. Will that be sufficient?

Pretty sure it will be, as long as you're not connected to the internet overnight. I rarely turn my PC off and I'm always connected to the internet, but if your PC is just off, that is probably sufficient.

To too late bitches!::flip::

My pinky finger was low on fluid and just dropped on the key, I propped it up with a pencil .........but it was to late.......way to late.........the thumb twited above the send key and then I sneezed, after that my memory goes blank for a sec and I woke up standing on the bed...........something smelled a bit funny and I realized my pop tarts were on fire. The thing is they were not mine. I hate brown sugar pop tarts.
