The little town of Friendship, NY has been taken over by hundreds of armed law enforcement authorities searching for escapees Matt and Sweat.

Parts of the community have been closed off and authorities are reportedly using dogs in attempt to track the convicted murderers.

The railroad tracks are said to be an area of focus, as possible sightings along railroad tracks have also been reported in other areas of the state.

Snip:
The latest possible sighting of fugitives Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 35, came in Allegany County, just north of the Pennsylvania border. That's where a witness reported seeing two men along a railroad line Saturday in the town of Friendship, New York State Police said.

While state police called the report an "unconfirmed sighting," a law enforcement source briefed on the prisoner investigation told CNN there was a credible sighting of Matt and Sweat near Friendship.

About 300 law enforcement officers have searched the area, Maj. Michael Cerretto of the New York State Police said Sunday at a press conference. Canine units and aircraft were used in the search, he said.

"We will continue to search this are until all leads are exhausted," he said.

The Allegany County Sheriff's Office said a tipster led investigators to a set of tracks in the area. Authorities were following the tracks to try to determine whether they're from the two escapees.

If Matt and Sweat were indeed in Friendship, that means they somehow traveled more than 300 miles southwest of Dannemora, New York, where they had escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility.

There's a tiny part of me that is rooting for the escaped convicts. I've purposefully ignored the heinous crimes that landed them in prison. Instead, I'm looking at this as a fucking awesome game of escape, hide and seek.

Murdering bastards...they need to be caught!! In the meantime, pass the popcorn. Smiley_emoticons_slash

I can still hear Andy telling Red: " if you've made it this far, perhaps you're willing to go a little further. Zihuantanejo. Remember it."

What a great scene to end the movie.

I think the important point of that scene was that, well, Red got released and Andy was innocent. So there's that.

Search Area Shift

The escaped killers were not in Friendship, NY which is about 360 miles west of the prison.

The 16 day search has shifted to a wooded area 30 miles west of the prison in Dannemora after a cabin was broken into near Wolf Pond, in the Saranac Lake region.

Dozens of troopers headed out in a heavy rainstorm carrying maps and bottled water. Helicopters were flying over the area and new checkpoints were set up on the roads there.

Yesterday police went to check the woodland cabin and found a jug of water and a jar of peanut butter on a table. The DNA traces reportedly indicate that the two men had been there just 24 hours earlier.

I hope the cop killer and the butcher get caught today.

I've spent time in that area and there are hunting camps & cabins all over the place. I understand they have dogs & a lot of people looking for those guys but that's a lot of area to cover.

Every time I see this thread bumped I'm hopeful it's to say they have been caught.

It's only a matter of time... just how much time is the question.

Frein made it 5 weeks or so in a more populated area. These two clowns could be in some much more desolate woodland, without provisions stashed away like Frein had.

But they've escaped and made it before, so who knows.

Bummer.

I kid, I kid. I'm surprised that they seem to have stayed together (but maybe the plan was to separate when they were further away). Two adult males are much more noticeable than one.

This is costing a significant amount of money. I don't have any firm figures but I know it passed the obscene amount awhile ago.

Yeah, I think it's the only verified lead authorities have had in weeks, and DNA is definitely more solid than an eye-witness account.

Seems likely that when Joyce Mitchell didn't show up to drive the get-away car and their pictures flooded the media, Matt and Sweat couldn't get too far and their plan was screwed. I think they probably will be found within 50 miles of the prison.

In addition to Mitchell, ^ Gene Palmer is a prison worker under suspicion. He is a 28 year veteran of the corrections department and was responsible for escorting prisoners. He's hasn't been charged with anything, but he's been put on leave as a result of the investigation and his lawyer says he's cooperating fully. Friends say he knew Matt and Sweat and that Matt had gifted him a painting, but they don't believe Palmer would have intentionally helped the convicts escape. We'll see.

Joyce Mitchell's husband ^ Lyle Mitchell appeared on the Today show. He told the host that Joyce told him that she NEVER slept with either of the inmates.

And, he said that she told him she only enjoyed the attention from cocky Richard Matt because she didn't believe that Lyle loved her anymore.

Furthermore, she told Lyle that she pulled out (of the getaway plan) when she learned that the inmates wanted to harm Lyle and she realized how much she still loves him.

Lyle says he still loves Joyce, but he's mad. He doesn't know if he's gonna testify against her.

I think Lyle is a sucker. But, I believe that he was clueless about Joyce's extracurricular activities and the escape plans.

Meanwhile, the search continues for the two killers about 20 miles from the prison.

I listened to a panel of attorneys & profilers discuss this last night. A couple of them kept insisting that dumb cow did this because she suffers from low self esteem. So not having any self esteem renders one brain dead? 78

She's full of shit alright.

This story is starting to piss me off. There were definitely some shady and some truly stupid people working at that maximum security prison.

Some new details of the investigation were released today
- Joyce Mitchell used baked goods to curry favor with a prison worker in order to get Matt and Sweat moved to adjoining cells 4 months prior to the break out.

- Mitchell sneaked cutting tools to the prisoners in a slab of frozen hamburger meat and got Gene Palmer, honor block guard, to bypass the metal detector. Palmer claims he was manipulated by Mitchell into violating policy and had no idea what she was up to.

- The hunting cabin where Matt and Sweat's DNA was found is owned by several correctional officers. Police found some prison-issued boxers, bloody socks and work boots belonging to the escapees inside the cabin.

I just read the NY Post Shaw-skank piece. That paper is such a rag, but entertaining.

I actually believe former inmate Erik Jensen over Joyce Mitchell. He says Joyce and Sweat were doing it in the tailor shop closet like 4 times a week. Sweat was transferred out of that work assignment after the investigation into their reported relationship, and that's when Matt took over wooing Joyce.

Those guys were locked up in a max security prison and still getting sex on the reg, take out food, etc...

Here's what Jensen told the Post.

Joyce made Sweat her head tailor, which put him behind a desk instead of a sewing machine. She often appeared giddy with excitement when they interacted, Jensen said.

“The way I can describe it is in high school, when one of the good-looking jocks looks at the ugly girl or asks her to the prom — that look on her face. She was ecstatic,” Jensen said. (Ouch!)

During lunchtime, when the inmates headed off to the mess hall for chow, Sweat would stay behind in the tailor shop with Joyce, Jensen said.

“Mitchell would bring him Subway sandwiches, hamburgers,” he said.

“The day after Labor Day, she brought in barbecue chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers . . . She put it inside a Styrofoam tray to make it look like it came from the mess hall.”

Hahaha!

Joyce ran a "Sweat" shop!

She needs the book thrown at her.

Another person abusing their position of public trust and authority.
