Record Breaking Prison Breaking -- UPDATE

Matt and Sweat have set the record for the longest jailbreak in New York state history. The longest previous escape from a New York prison lasted just three days, according to data from the New York Department of Corrections. Matt and Sweat have been out for six days now.

In the past decade, freedom lasted less than six hours for 60% of the 30 inmates who succeeded in breaking out.

Yesterday, authorities extended their hunt to Vermont after police revealed that the escaped prisoners had discussed heading to the rural state by a ferry 40 miles south of the prison.

“We have information that suggests that they thought New York was going to be hot,” said Vermont governor Peter Shumlin, “and Vermont would be cooler in terms of law enforcement and that a camp in Vermont might be a better place to be.”

Today, Hwy 374 in New York is shut and swarming with authorities and searchers after a canine reportedly picked up the escapees' scents about 5 miles from the prison in Dannemora and wrappers were found. Police don't know if Matt and Sweat bedded down there at first and then took off, or if they're instead hunkered down in that area.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo conceded on Wednesday that the investigations inside and outside the prison had yet to produce tangible clues.

This kinda surprised to read, in a good way: nationwide, the number of prison escapes has dropped sharply, from 100 inmates per 10,000 in the 1980s to one per 10,000.

People in that area must be deeply concerned and armed to the teeth!

Not as armed as they once were... NY put serious restrictions (i.e. making guns that were legal now illegal) on long guns and such after Sandy Hook, and handguns are a pain in the ass to own in the state.

Looks like she's in deep shit; such a foolish woman.

Authorities reportedly plan to charge Joyce Mitchell, but the exact charges haven't been released.

They say that Richard Matt wooed her for months, that she told investigators "he made her feel special" and she thought it was love between her and the double murderer.

It's confirmed that she was supposed to drive the getaway car, but she instead checked herself into the hospital for "nerves". That might explain why police have been focusing the search locally even though the escapees had a substantial head start.

The prison worker has been arrested and is about to be arraigned at any moment. It sounds like they will be putting her through a perp walk.

I was listening to a couple attorneys talking about this and they said if those men kill anyone while on the run she will be charged with that too.

Sorry Mags, didn't see your question before.

Governor Cuomo announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of each escapee -- $100,000 for both.

Honestly, for what she's done, she should SERVE 20 years before being eligible for parole. And, if they kill anyone while out, she should be LWOP.

I agree. We don't know that they aren't holed up somewhere terrorizing a random family. We don't know the damage they may have already done, we don't know anything and a ton of people are at risk.

Her bail is set at $110,000 cash. Apparently she was shakin' like a leaf and didn't even want to lift her head to look anyone in the eye. Good. She deserves to be scared out of her mind.

Matt and Sweat have evaded capture for 8 days now.

The charging documents indicate that police suspect Joyce Mitchell supplied Matt and Sweat with some of the tools used to break out. She faces a max of 7 years.

Her husband, Lyle Mitchell ^ (pictured with Joyce and their enlisted son) also works at the prison and is being investigated for possible involvement, as are other prison employees who had contact with the escapees.

She threw her life away for two total pieces of shit; such a stupid woman.

I think the prison administration has a lot to answer for as well. They'd already investigated her for a previous complaint about an inappropriate relationship with the convicts and determined there wasn't enough evidence. Still, IMO, they should have increased supervision of her. And, the fact that the two men could cut their way out for 2 days without detection seems like very lax "maximum security", to say the least.

So much time has now passed, and even with an army of cops searching for these guys, it seems they may have just gotten away and will not be found! (I hope I'm wrong.)

Only hope is that eventually "someone" will have the nerve to rat them out for the reward.

I don't know if this is gossip or not so take it for what it's worth - I read that the reason she got cold feet when it came to picking up the escapees is because they planned to murder her husband.

And maybe even her, leave no loose ends. Neither of them were in love with her.

It was reported yesterday that officials are investigating whether Joyce not only had sexual relationships with both escapees on prison grounds and helped them escape, but also plotted with them to kill her husband.

Officials also suggested that she might have been a "loose end" target for Matt and Sweat had she not checked herself into the hospital.

Clinton County Sheriff David Favro has said that he does not feel Mitchell was the convicts' main getaway plan, as she 'would have been baggage to them,' calling her instead their 'backup plan'.

At a cost of $1 million per day, there are currently 800 local, state and federal law enforcement officers on the case, using everything from K9 dogs and helicopters in a bid to find the escaped killers.

Making matters worse, a New York state official told CNN that the search has gone cold, with no real breaks in the past week.

The convicts left a second note in addition to the one that read 'Have a nice day' - though the contents have not been released to the public. It is unknown if that note provides any clues as to where the men may have gone.
