Chicago  -- Five Murdered in their Homes

While shooting deaths on the streets are on the decline in Chicago, they still happen way too frequently (often drug or gang-related).

This one is different.  Five people were shot dead on Saturday by a retired 67-year-old construction worker with apparent 'anger management issues' as they were relaxing in their own condos.  

The deceased are a family of four who were eating dinner when the killer (male) busted in and shot them, along with a woman in a condo on a different floor who was home alone relaxing.  Rest in peace.

The suspected killer hasn't yet been publicly identified.  He is a fifteen year resident of the same condo complex and is in police custody as investigators work to determine a motive, uncover how he got the gun, etc.  Charges haven't been filed yet.

The news was all over the radio here in So Cal yesterday morning. Very sad. 

At that time, the reports were that a young Asian male dressed in black was the shooter, and he was on the loose.  Two elementary schools near the crime scene (Saugus High School) were immediately locked down.  

Later yesterday I heard that the shooter had actually shot himself in the head with the final round of his semi automatic handgun.   I don’t know if police initially mistook him for one of his victims or if the reporting was just wrong. 

Anyway, turns out the shooter was a student at Saugus and it was his 16^th birthday. He shot 5 students aged 14 to 16 in the quad before turning the gun on himself. 

Three of the teen victims survived and are going to make it. Unfortunately, a teen boy and a teen girl died.  Rest In Peace.

Police said the targets seemed random, based on surveillance footage of the attack.  

The shooter is still alive and is reportedly in grave condition.

Juvenile criminal records are generally sealed by law enforcement from public release.

And, while there is no law prohibiting it, many news outlets refrain from publishing the names and photos of minors accused/convicted of crimes if they uncover and verify their identities, as a matter of policy.

In this case, the 16-year-old shooter (Nathaniel Tennosuke Berhow) did not have a criminal record and was not charged with any crime before he died this afternoon.  

However, he was accused of being the shooter and was caught on video carrying out the mass shooting.  And, by state law, California law enforcement agencies have discretion to release the names of juveniles accused of crimes that are classified as serious or violent (Cal. Welf. & Inst. Code § § 827.2, 827.5, 827.6 (2014)), which would certainly apply in this case..

Update -- Saugus High School Shooting

California LE says that a search of the Berhow home uncovered six firearms registered to the teen shooter's late father, along with several other unregistered guns.

LE is still investigating whether the deceased shooter took the semi-automatic handgun used in yesterday's shooting from his home or obtained it elsewhere. They are also trying to uncover a motive.

LE has confirmed that the mass shooting went down in 16 seconds, even though the shooter's gun jammed in the process. 

Classmates who knew Berhow say they were surprised to learn that he was the shooter.  He was described as a quiet kid with a girlfriend, active with the Boy Scouts, and not someone who was bullied.

Thus far, it appears that this one of the few cases where there weren't any glaring red flags raised in advance.  That may change as the investigation progresses and more details come to light.

The deceased victims of the Saugus High School shooting have been identified  by the Los Angeles County Dept. of Medical Examiner-Coroner as Gracie Anne Muehlberger, 15, and Dominic Blackwell, 14.

Fresno, CA

Last night, 10 people were shot during a football-watching party at a home in southeast Fresno.

All of the victims were Asian males aged 25 - 35 who were in the backyard; there were women and children inside the house at the time.

4 of the victims died and the other six are being treated at local hospitals.

Investigators are interviewing witnesses, checking for surveillance cameras that may have captured something, and searching the area for clues that might help them figure out who did this. So far, they have no leads.

"Somebody picked that house and came up and shot several times on the back side of it, it looks like there was a target, we just don't know what the reasoning for the targeting was," said Deputy Chief Reid.

This is a developing news story.

More Military Base Mass Shootings

Two naval bases have been targeted by mass shooters this week.

Hawaii:
On Wednesday, A 22-year-old active-duty sailor opened fire on three civilian employees, killing two, before he fatally shot himself at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard near Honolulu, Hawaii.

The suspected shooter was identified as 22-year-old G. Romero. He opened fire on shipyard personnel with his M4 service rifle and then used his M9 service pistol to shoot himself, the official said.  https://abcnews.go.com/US/shooting-repor...d=67506641

Florida:
This morning, a mass shooter killed at least three people at the Pensacola (Florida) Naval Air Station before being shot dead by a responding police officer.  Seven other people were injured and are being treated, including two responding police officers. 

The base remains locked down amid a huge law enforcement response. The naval station employs thousands of people and sprawls along the Pensacola waterfront.

The deceased shooter in today's mass shooting at the Pensacola naval training base has been identified as a Saudi aviation student.

That brings back memories of the 9 / 11 attacks which were carried out mostly by Saudis, some of whom were taking private aviation lessons in the U.S.

Anyway, the killer's name has not been confirmed by authorities who are investigating possible motives, including terrorism.

Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump ignored Congress and refused to condemn or sanction Saudi Arabia when (overwhelming evidence shows) the country's crown prince and friend of Jared Kushner ordered the butchering of a Saudi-born Washington Post journalist who protested against human rights violations in the country.

Today, President Trump tweeted about how the King of Saudi Arabia reached out to him to express how sorry the people of Saudi Arabia, who he says love America, feel about today's mass shooting by a member of the Saudi military at the Pensacola naval training base.

Anyway, here's the latest on the Pensacola mass shooting.

The Saudi Air Force trainee who killed three and injured eight when he opened fire at a naval base in Florida on Friday assailed the United States as 'a nation of evil' just before his shooting rampage, AFP reports. 

The man, identified as Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani (pictured below), opened fire inside a classroom at Naval Air Station in Pensacola early Friday morning. Police quickly responded to the scene and he was shot dead.  Alshamrani was a second lieutenant in the Saudi military attending the aviation school at the base. 

On Friday evening, the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist media, claimed they had tracked a Twitter account belonging to Alshamrani which featured a disturbing tweet written just hours before the shooting. 

'I'm against evil, and America as a whole has turned into a nation of evil,' the tweet read. 'I'm not against you for just being American, I don't hate you because your freedoms, I hate you because every day you supporting, funding and committing crimes not only against Muslims but also humanity,' Alshamrani wrote.

The Twitter account that posted the manifesto - which also condemned US support for Israel and included a quote from Al-Qaeda's deceased leader, the Saudi Osama bin Laden -  has now been suspended. 

Meanwhile six other Saudi nationals were arrested near the base shortly after the attack, as investigators began to probe a terror link.  

Three of the six were reportedly seen filming the entire incident as it unfolded.
