My cell phone is the only phone I have and it's $60/month for unlimited everything. Not a bad deal.

what if your car breaks down and you are not able to call anyone? what if you are at the mall and your loved one is injured or has a heart attack (or any similar situation)? how will you call 911 quickly?
what if you have out of town guests coming to meet you somewhere and they get lost and can not call you? beyond all of the obvious social and business reasons, having a cell phone is a positive thing.

I also do not have a landline. We ONLY have our cell phones.
In general old-school Landlines are things of the past as we become increasingly more mobile (no pun intended) and connected to the WWW. I do not know one person who still has a land line.

I only use it for my buisness and I think it's giving me a brain tumor. I have two cell phones that I answer all day and my fucking ear is going numb. I've been to three doctors and they don't know whats wrong with me. Anyway, I would never talk on the fucking phone again if I didn't have to.

All cell phones are supposed to be able to call 911, even without a carrier, for true emergency purposes.

Sadly, here in California when you place a 911 emergency call on a cell phone it is connected with the CHP emergency dispatch.
It takes a landline to access regular 911 service. The CHP can be so backed up (remember, the same "911" is used on every single call box on the side of the freeways here) the waiting can be easily ten minutes, or longer.

I still have a landline phone too. I don't give out my cell # and only use it when I'm away from home. I couldn't bear it if that were my only phone # where people can reach me. I'd have my mother calling every ten minutes to tell me the cute things her cat does, among other rediculous calls that I can easily avoid.
Liquid, people CAN use pay phones - if they can find one and IF that one pay phone isn't all fucked up or filthy with some nasty gunk of unknown origin on it. I've noticed there are less and less pay phones around now.

Nasty gunk of known origin is okay, though.

Rick got me a cell when we were still dating. Up til then I had happily lived without one, and would probably have no problem doing so in the future. Heavin forbid I turn it off, or mute it when I am in a meeting, or somewhere I cannot answer the phone, and he is trying to call. I remind him of this neat feature I have called voice mail. I refuse to talk whil driving, even with a head set. If the phone rings while I am driving I pull over. but only if I feel I can safely do so. If not, it goes unanswered.
Yeah, it is convenient when the car breaks down, but I have a bad habit of forgetting to charge the bugger.

Well...I had to resurrect this old post from the dead.
My son talked me into getting a phone plan with him. And it's a gawddamned Blackberry to boot. It's been sitting here for 3 days and I just keep staring at it like it's gonna fucking grow fangs and jump off the desk and attack me. I will admit there were a few times when I missed having a cell in the last year, but I think I could have made it through my life without another. It's a good thing the fucker was free. I want to throw it out the window.
