Hey JB, have you considered putting in a small fenced in area? Like a large dog run?

This way you can leave Fido out and unsupervised for short periods of time when you're doing things inside and what not knowing he's safe.

I've a fenced in yard and a run for my dogs. The run is more for protection to the guests though.

i'd have to clear a lot of trees! Smiley_emoticons_biggrinthe clear area now is my garden. i hate confining a breed like a shepard, i didn't even have a dog while i lived in florida, too damn hot, snakes, and i worked 12-hour shifts. maybe i'll just get a bird! i had one in florida, messy but cute as hell.

Why clear trees? Build around them. Nothing in the world says you can't have an odd shaped pen for the dog. Chain link fence is the way to go and you can put it up in pre-built sections to any shape you want.
