I don't see him as brilliant. The establishment presents him in that light, just as they do with other "luminaries" that represent elite interests, Alan Greenspan being a good example.

His intelligence is well above average, but that alone doesn't equate to brilliance. What he does have is tremendous influence, and if you have the right pedigree and a shit ton of money you can purchase it.

He's a man of great stature to many among the pundrity. I've never had the chance to sit down and talk to him, obviously, but I did watch an interview with Charlie Rose about 15 years ago and wasn't impressed.

Is he exceptional when it comes to Machiavellian machinations? I would say no, but he is certainly a man who thinks critically and knows how to leverage influence.
