Reading Sin's comment in another thread regarding whaling someone with a baseball bat made me wince because I could imagine the act of doing just that, I didn't like that "feeling" yet, I am certain I could put a bullet in someone in order to protect me & mine...That struck me as such an odd contradiction, as if a gun is more impersonal than a baseball bat or a knife...I thinkit musttake more of ones' psychein order to takesomeone out in a hand to hand combat way.
In reference to that comment about the bat; that is what skinheads do. It is their weapon of choice. Don't you agree that people that fucked up deserve a taste of their own "medicine"? They think nothing of beating the shit out of anyone they consider inferior and that includes gays, Jews, drug users, blacks, Asians, Arabics etc. In fact, there is a story about a group of those fuckers who came across a guy during the night and asked him if he did drugs. He said he did; for the voices in his head. He was a schizophreniac and the drug he took was lithium (I think)and he was lily white. They beat him with bats, then curb-stomped him. It took about 5 days, but he did finally die.
Don't people who do shit like that deserve to feel what they dish out?

Yes, absolutely, I do agree with that...I didn't express myself well enough if you took that the wrong way...I didn't even give a thought to skinheads or their ilk as I was composing that post...It was my own personal contradiction to violence that was on my mind...Like I was being a hypocrite in a fashion because I was totally ok with shooting someone but, hands on violence turned me off...
I'm a firm believer that "You reap what you sow"..."An eye for an eye"...etc.....FYI

You are ok with shooting someone in order to protect your life or Cowboy's life. What if your gun was out of reach but you had another weapon you could use; one that maybe wouldn't be as accurate as the gun, or as immediately deadly, but would save you or Cowboy? You think hand to hand combat is "icky" or whatever, but trust me; when your life is in danger, you will use whatever means necessary to protect yourself. BTDT. Hopefully, you'll never have to be. Pleasant or not; palatable or not,you do what you have to do.

I'm just surprised at my aversion to it, I'd never thought about it like that before and I was taken aback...And I'm disappointed in myself that I would be a hypocrite about a weapon of choice and/or neccessity.

Shooting someone (or something) with a gun can be a cold and impersonal act, I used to shoot rabbits, hares, wood pigeons, pheasants and grouse and it didn't bother me in the slightest, I don't do it anymore but at the time it didn't bother me.
Show me a hare caught alive in a snare and hand me a knife and it suddenly becomes a different story, I have done it on my Grandads farm before, a neat thrust straight to the heart was the quickest and best way, but feeling a creature (or person) breathing and moving up close takes killing or injuring into a different realm.
I am quite used to using my feet and fists, I have been in quite a few rucks in the past and usually came out on top but I was no hero thats for sure, you do become more accustomed to it the more you do it. You become used to the feeling and vibration of landing blows and used to the pain signals when you are hit with a blow, you get used to the adrenalin rush and learn how to use it to your advantage.
I personally have no qualms about inflicting pain up close and personal on anyone who attacks me, if I get you on the floor you are well and truly fucked because I will kick your head like a soccer ball until you stop moving.

You're not a hypocrite about it, Dutch. You have never been in the position where you had to protect yourself with a weapon or your hands. (I would imagine, anyway.) You would see it differently if you were put in that position. A person never knows what they will do in any given situation until they are in it.
