Well, then I guess I have no other choice but to start a thread in your picture section.
It will show you the misteries and well kept secrets of this country as well as the one who is Mohammed.

Gingerbread is a great description. Are you saying that some of those buildings are 1000 years old?!!! Who lives in the ones carved into the stone mountain formations? Have you been inside? I'd love to see inside. Have they been retrofitted with indoor plumbing? Truly amazing.
Does Yemem have harsh laws and Islamic rule? Do they cut off hands and heads and stone people? I don't doubt that the women are beautiful under the shrouds. Arab women are very pretty. It's the shrouds that I hate. So, what are you doing there, Mohammed? Not with a govt but working closely with them ... NGO, private supplier/contractor, mercenary?

Hey, Mo - those grids over the second story windows; do you happen to know what material they're made of?

No shit, Duchess. I'm sacred shitless of heights.
What a strange landscape. Definitely the most different looking place I've ever seen, after the beehive type structures in Turkey.

No, there is no strict islamic law here. Nobody get's their hands or heads cut off. The people got a great respect towards each other and it's very safe here. I run out of fuel in the middle of the desert and a single guy walking past took me to a village full of guys squatting with their AK's. 5 minutes later I had a full tank.
The buildings are actually not carved into the mountains but build on them and just resemble the mountains structure. If they wouldn't have the white Alabaster paintings on them you wouldn't even notice them when you drive by. It's simply for security as there was always some tribal fighting going on here, which is also the reason why they build them that high up. The average woman got 6.2 children here, my reasoning is simply that by living in those areas, it must be quite normal to loose a few. The shrouds or Burkhas are actually something the women here like for the simply reason that nobody bothers them and they are walking thru places with this great sense of anonimity. I always wondered how on earth a lost child in a shopping mall goes about trying to find its mother.

They left already a few months back. Those grids are a tradional feature of Yemeni windows and architecture. They are called Moon Lights and come in many shapes, forms and sizes and are usually put right over the clear windows. The thing they all have in common is that they are made with all those different coloured glass. It looks truly cute when the sun shines thru them as suddenly the room is being flooded with all those different colours.

So, are you from Yemen, Mo? If not, where from? What's your line of work?
Why do the guys have AKs? Are the window grids made of plaster, carved wood, iron?

Another question, Mo: In this photo the lady is covered in a fabric, not a burkha. Is that common and do the women cover themselves in different types of whole body coverings? Do you know of any link where I might purchase one like the lady is wearing?
Very beautiful! Looks Indian.

Maybe we should have a "MO" thread. I'm really interested in all this too. Mo, have you ever had a cheeseburger & fries?

My question to Mo was more along the thinking that there is a war situation going on, but I don't know anything about it. I wonder if they're at risk from other tribes or the Saudis, etc.

My honey does not hunt and he never uses them, either. There's an indoor firing range near me so I thought about going there to learn how to handle the handgun. I don't know where to go to shoot a rifle or a shotgun. I wouldn't do it outside because I'd be afraid that a living creature in the distance might be harmed.

We shall get more about myself later.
In all the highlands of Yemen, Men MUST have a Djambia. That's the knife you see in front of them. It is less of a weapon than a status symbol. But it is worn on a daily basis. Now in ALL of Yemen the other thing a man must have is his Kalashnikov. Every single man and boy here has one and they learn using them from about 3 years on. The fabric the lady is covered with is actually a traditional Yemeni dress. The Burkha came just recently actually thru Saudi Arabia. Before that this country was all colourful. I believe it was Khomeini who threw this whole area back into the middle ages. Aden was the most sophisticated spot in all of Arabia when there was no Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, etc, and you can see many old signs of Mercedes Benz, Rolex and Rolls Royce. But then they kicked out the Brits and it became the first and only Marxist state run by Islam. And the rest is history. I will check where to get one of those clothes.
