Death is not punishment enough.

Looks like the other inmates at the prison he's housed in agree with you.  The suspect has just been moved to isolation for his own protection; he was being threatened as a result of the publicity surrounding the Madeleine McCann case updates.

I wouldn't shed a tear if the convicted rapist and pedophile died, but really hope that doesn't happen until/unless suspect Christian Brueckner is proven beyond reasonable doubt to be responsible for Madeleine's abduction (and likely death).

Right now, LE doesn't seem to have enough evidence to charge him in the case.  He's behind bars on drug charges and for the rape of a 72-year-old woman.

The only evidence against him in the McCann case, as far as I've found in public accounts, is that he was in the same resort area of Portugal and has ties to a couple of vehicles that were seen cruising the area around the time Madeleine was reported missing.  

Brueckner's attorney says that Brueckner denies any involvement in the McCann case, and Brueckner himself is refusing to speak with detectives.

A defence lawyer in a recent child neglect court case asked the same question.  His client was accused of leaving her five year old son alone in the house for a few hours.  He argued “if my client is guilty of neglect then why weren't the McCann parents charged?”

The McCanns and their supporters hummed and harred “how dare he say that!” Completely overlooking the fact he had made a perfectly legitimate point.

I remember very clearly Cynical Ninja blaming the parents. Now look, I bet they have a treasure trove of evidence.

Update -- from today's news reports:

Portuguese police and firefighters explored three old, disused wells in their search for the body of missing Madeleine McCann.

The operation in a remote corner of the Algarve coast involved more than a dozen investigators using specialist climbing gear, including harnesses and ropes.

It is understood the searchers found no evidence of Madeleine.

The wells are close to each other beside a narrow road that leads to Boca do Rio beach near the town of Budens which is a half-hour drive from Praia da Luz, the resort where three-year-old Madeleine vanished in 2007.

It is believed the beach, a kilometre from the wells, was well-known to Brueckner, the German drifter who is now the main suspect in Madeleine's disappearance.

Vegetation around the wells had clearly been trodden down by the investigators who are thought to have spent more than a day searching.

The land was sold three years ago by farmer Augusto Martins, who said police had not searched the area before.

The investigation into Brueckner's alleged involvement is led by German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters, who told Sky News last month he wanted to hear from anyone with information about places known to the suspect.

He says he has evidence that Madeleine is dead and insists he is conducting a murder investigation.

German and British police involved in the search for Madeleine have received nearly 2,000 bits of information since launching appeals for public help five weeks ago.

A source said: "There are lots of leads being followed up, most of which will be of no use. But a search of a well is a complicated business and that suggests the police were working on good, credible information."

Update:

Investigators are reportedly searching up to 20 additional wells near where suspect Christian Brueckner was staying/roaming when 3-year-old Madeleine went missing from a Praia da Luz, Portugal resort hotel room back in 2007.

Investigators are said to be in a race against the clock because Brueckner has almost served his time on the drug charges for which he is now incarcerated in Germany.

He also has a conviction for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal against him (he was convicted in Germany after being extradited from Portugal). 

However, he has not started serving the rape sentence yet and is appealing the conviction.  The appeal is due to be heard in court tomorrow.

It's possible that Brueckner could be released from German prison on Friday if the appeal is granted.

Braunschweig public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has refused to say if paedophile Christian Brueckner will face charges over the British three-year-old’s abduction in 2007.

But police are facing a race against time to keep him in jail – with an appeal against a rape conviction due to be heard in court tomorrow.


Mr Wolters ^  said: “We have no endeavours to drag this out unnecessarily. We’ll draw a line at some point and see: Is it enough for an indictment or not?”

He said: “We have an interest in keeping our suspect in custody. This gives us access to interrogations and in the event of an indictment.”
