Beaming before an exultant sea of people, Mr Obama clearly revelled in his distant Irish ancestry, offering spirited thanks from tens of millions of Americans who trace connections to Ireland.
Bravely attempting Gaelic pronunciation - and evoking the memory of John F Kennedy similarly tackling the local dialect in Berlin in the Sixties - Mr Obama offered: 'Now, some wise Irish man or woman once said that broken Irish is better than clever English.
'So here goes: "Tá athas orm bheith in Éireann", I’m happy to be in Ireland.'
