One minute, Caleigh Anne Harrison was playing with her family at Long Beach in Rockport, Mass. - and then the next, she was gone.

..."He said, 'You gotta help me, you gotta help me, she's missing, she's missing,'" said family friend Dan Rapp, describing the frantic phone call he received from Caleigh's father.

"He said that his wife was at the waters edge with the dog, playing with a ball," said Rapp. "The ball went into rough water, she went to get the ball and when she turned around, the daughter was missing."

It could be bad reporting, it could be the father misunderstood what his wife said, it could be the father's friend misunderstood what the father said, it could be what the mother actually told the father.

i really have no reason to suspect mom, these horrible things do happen near the sea, i encounter so much sloppy reporting that i'm going to agree that is likely the problem. cynicism runs deep sadly. until there is some clue, some recovery, some reason to look elsewhere. the mother and dad have not come out to say anything, and i wonder if she isn't feeling a lot of guilt. maybe turned her back for more than a minute or two.

The heartbroken family of a missing Gloucester toddler held a vigil at Long Beach in Rockport last night, the site of an air and sea search for 2-year-old Caleigh Harrison, who vanished late Thursday morning.

“We’re holding out hope that we’re going to find Caleigh,” said the missing tot’s uncle, David Harrison Jr. “We’re going to keep going and going until we have some kind of result or closure or something.”

Dozens of friends and family gathered on the beach last night, lighting candles and saying prayers for Caleigh’s safe return.

“I don’t want to think that she’s in the water,” Harrison said. “I’m thinking she’s going to show up, that she’s safe somewhere and someone is going to bring her home.”

State police said divers are expected to comb the coastal waters again today, unable so far to pick up any sign of the Gloucester girl. A search dog yesterday sniffed along the rocky shores of Cape Hedge, where authorities believe the current could have carried her.

State police said they have not ruled out the possibility Caleigh was abducted. They plan to have a child expert interview her 4-year-old sister, who was with her when their mother, Allison Hammond, turned away for a moment to chase a ball they’d been playing with.

I wonder what the chances of her being abducted really are, do we know if others we're on the beach at the time? I hope te sister remembers something, this is so sad, little Caleigh is probably in the water somewhere, maybe she saw something in it and wanted to have a look, kids are curious.

The news reports I read said there were few other people on the beach at the time. Of course, it only takes one.

The ocean is quick though. I'm in Northern California and many of the beaches here are treacherous. I've seen people walking along the beach just at the point where where the waves are washing up. All of a sudden a wave comes in at mid-calf level and it's hard to keep your balance. Even an adult can get knocked down with a wave that size as the water goes back out. If Caleigh was at all near the water line, I'm afraid that's what happened. As sad as that is, at least death would have been fairly quick. If it was an abduction - I always hope the abductor is someone who wanted a child and is treating the child well - that rarely seems to happen (thinking of poor Tori).

i would really like to hear from the parents. i don't think they are married, don't know if they cohabit. doesn't really matter. i am sure they are frantic, but it's simply i want to hear what they have to say and get a "feel" for them.

it seems very few people were on the beach.

i am being told that if she fell in at the spot where they were, she would NOT have been instantly swept to sea. it's a little creek/estuary that kids do play in. and the footbridge had a fence.

divers were/are back in today.

experts are to interview the sister today. i hope they can ascertain something.

the girl’s grandmother, Antonette Harrison, said Caleigh is a toddler with a quick smile who never cried or whined. The child is always eager to go on trips to visit family, she said.

Antonette Harrison urged others in the region to keep on the lookout for the 2-year-old with light brown hair and blue-gray eyes, last seen wearing a light pink T-shirt and dark pink Capri pants.

“She’s got to be somewhere,” said Antonette Harrison. “Please just keep looking, wherever you are — in the mall, at the store.”

Caleigh’s parents, Allison Hammond and Anthony Harrison, stood watch at the beach in the search’s third day yesterday, family spokesman David Harrison Jr. said. Through him, they declined to speak with a Herald reporter.


Police said inclement weather expected for the next couple of days will force them to resume searching the area on Tuesday. Authorities said at that time, the State Police Marine Section and dive team will return to the area and deploy sonar equipment.
On Saturday, state police officers, dogs and helicopters resumed searching for the toddler.

Police spokesman David Procopio said divers searched along rocky shorelines and outcroppings, including the shore of Milk Island and a group of rocks just below the surface about halfway between the island and Saratoga Point.

ROCKPORT — With rough weather today continuing to stall the search for 2-year-old Caleigh Ann Harrison, hopes are being pinned on the results of a weekend interview with Caleigh's 4-year-old sister to help find the missing child.

Elizabeth Harrison, 4, spoke with a person trained in caring for children with traumatic experiences — described as a child psychologist by family members — on Saturday, according to David Harrison, Jr., brother of Caleigh's father, Anthony Harrison. Elizabeth had initially told State Police she could not remember what happened in the last moments before Caleigh disappeared. Authorities have not advised family members any results from Saturday's interview.

Elizabeth and Caleigh were playing on Long Beach near Cape Hedge Beach with their mother, Alison Hammond, and the family dog. Hammond turned from the girls to get a wayward ball, and when she returned, Caleigh was gone.

Massachusetts State Police reiterated this morning that foul play could not be ruled out at this point — noting that though there seems to be no evidence of an abduction, without proof that Caleigh went into the ocean, alternative scenarios cannot be discounted either.

"We'd have to have obviously clear information that Caleigh entered the water," said State Police spokesman David Procopio. "We can't say for sure what happened to her."

Under bright blue skies, State Police are resuming their search today off Long and Cape Hedge beaches in Rockport for a 2-year-old girl who vanished Thursday.

State Police say they plan to deploy side-scan sonar from a boat and put approximately 20 divers into the ocean to look for Caleigh Anne Harrison of Gloucester. Three boats and a helicopter could be seen in the water off the coast at mid-morning.

State and local police are continuing their investigation into the disappearance. No cause has been ruled out, State Police said.

ROCKPORT, Mass. (WHDH) -- State police used side-scan sonar to search the water near Long Beach in Rockport Wednesday as they resumed their search for a 2-year-old girl. But family members say they now believe the girl was abducted.

Crews continued their search for Caleigh Harrison, who was reported missing around noon last Thursday. Her mother told investigators she turned away from Caleigh and her 4-year-old sister for a couple of minutes to retrieve a ball, and Caleigh was gone when she returned.

Officials said so far there have been no signs of the Caleigh. Family members told 7News that they now believe she may have been abducted.

“At the perfect opportune time where they were, they place they were on the beach, they could have gone around the wall and somebody could have taken her,” said Catherine Curcuru, Caleigh’s aunt.

Crews on land and in the water have been searching for Caleigh Anne Harrison, who was last seen Thursday off Rockport's Long Beach. The child's relatives have expressed concern that the girl may have been abducted.

"At this point we have investigated the theory of abduction," Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio said. "We have interviewed four witnesses who were in the vicinity of the girl when she went missing. We have not been able to establish that there was anyone else in the vicinity that could have been responsible for an abduction."

A state police boat used side-scan sonar to search the area again Wednesday, and state police said they would continue the search Thursday.

last night dad and uncle spoke on nancy grace, mom was not there. what was interesting was a graphic...it showed that the ball bounced UP a 12' seawall and over a fence, so that mom had to walk 60 yards to stairs to go retrieve ball while kids remained below.
i would have left the ball there. it was quite a hike if accurate.

The father of missing Gloucester 2-year-old Caleigh Harrison told a CNN Headline News television audience Wednesday night that, while Massachusetts State Police maintain there is no evidence indicating that the little girl was abducted, Caleigh's 4-year-old sister Elizabeth has talked of seeing "a man in the beach" who may have taken her sister.

"She mentions a man," Anthony Harrison told the "Nancy Grace Show" Wednesday in an interview recorded earlier in the day, then broadcast last night. "It's a little bit scattered because she is four years old, but she did, after a while, mention a man on the beach that took her sister," Harrison said.

Previously, members of the Harrison family said they believed Caleigh may have been abducted largely because the extensive search of the water near where she disappeared had turned up nothing. State Police have emphasized since the disappearance that could not rule out foul play, but they also never issued an Ambert alert regarding any evidence of an abduction.

State Police spokesman David Procopio reiterated this morning that, while abduction cannot be 100 percent ruled out, there is no evidence to support that theory.

"We thoroughly investigated the potential for abduction," Procopio said in an email to the Times. "As we told reporters when we suspended the water search, we found no evidence to support the abduction theory. That does not mean that we can say with 100 percent certainty that foul play did not occur, only that we have found no evidence of it — including no evidence of a mysterious man on the beach."

I, too, would've left the ball or at least had the girls walk with me. If either of the girls had ventured near the water and the mom had turned and saw it, she would've been too far away to get back to them in time. No conscientious mother does this. That's why I have a hard time believing her story. Maybe there *was* a man on the beach and the mom handed the girl off?

i frankly think there are inconsistencies with the mom. and that the little 4-year-old sister is saying what she thinks the grownups want to hear.
