My children could very well be predisposed to alcoholism since my dad was an alcoholic, but I don't think allowing them to have a glass of champagne on New years is whats going to unleash the beast. It's genetic, you're either an alcoholic or your not.

It's like checking for balding within your family: look at your mom's uncle.
If he's bald (and an alcoholic) your kids are screwed.

That would have been my great uncle Dick, AKA Silver Fox. I only met him once, but he had a head of salt and pepper hair that drove the ladies insane. Not sure if he was an alcoholic or not though.

crack addicts i have talked to (many) have told me they were hooked from day one strong cheap rocks that were first aimed at the black population, then moved into more mainstream that couldn't afford $100. gram powder. then again you have to factor in addictive personalities, blah blah blah. as well as their other addictions. nearly every hooker i ever met was working for crack. and having baby after baby. that's a whole other sad topic because the babies are born addicted and removed from mother right in the hospital. some people i knew killed their own family members for money for crack. after the family members objected to being robbed.

every year at high school grad time we see tragic stories of kids dying in alcohol-related accidents.

the year my son was graduating i decided to get some control. i knew they'd go out and drink & celebrate. i loved his friends, could not bear a tragedy at graduation. those kids all grew up together at each others' homes and on the baseball team. hell, i took them to space shuttle launches when they were 13. i was not going to lose one.

i had a big inground pool. it was fenced in by a huge screenhouse. so they all were invited to a pool party, and brought beer. i collected everyone's car keys at the door or they didn't get in. they went out to the pool and had an all night blast. i laughed my butt off listening to them. they slept all over my house. but safe and alive.

would i have been liable? yes. but thankfully it didn't come to that. at least i knew where they all were! and i had spoken to their parents about it.

Sure, I've still got bitter memories of that.

when they did grad pics the kid next to my son alphabetically was killed 20 minutes later in a crash. i could hear his mom screaming from 2 blocks away within minutes. it never left me. he was still in the yearbook next to my son. i never wanted to hear that again even if i had to deliver the horrible news.

i'm so thankful i've cycled out of that state of life. I found it so stressful. and parents having different strategies of how to manage. i used to joke when people would ask how was it going, and i'd say "there was a lot of sex, drugs and rock n rollin' going on but my husband and i weren't getting any of it." both our fathers were so over the top strict and husb's even beat him...plus, we both rebelled...that if we were ever blessed to have kids, we'd be more loving, easy, fun environment blah blah...

i think we went too much in the other direction...there needs to be a balance....our house was the hang out plus we had a lake house near by which my husb and i would sneak off to over night with strict rules to the kids about no one over (ages 15, 17 & 19) ...(ok stupid stupid stupid i know) my husband and i were hardly goobers in HS so we both thought teens trying to have a couple beers and some friends over was normal ...at least they're home safe, etc...so we did turn our heads to the occasional...wouldn't put up with that for a moment today. my ethical feelings have changed and legal reasons.

That is so sad. Was it his fault? Drinking? Or just a tragic accident?

I don't know if drinking is the cause of the accident LC just mentioned but why would any of you be sad for someone who drank & then got behind the wheel and killed themselves? Fuck that. I don't have any sympathy for those that die because of drinking & driving, they did it to themselves. I save my sympathy for those that die because of someone's poor judgement. I feel for those that get hurt or killed because of a drunk driver. It's my personal opinion that those who do that should be charged with at least manslaughter and they should spend a significant chunk of time in the slammer. There are no do overs when you kill someone because you weren't smart enough to refrain from driving while drunk. Dead is dead.

no...rainy, wet road, 18-wheeler crushed his car after leaving school photo session for yearbook. but having seen all the deaths of HS kids around graduations and proms, it hit home hard.
