Ex-FBI chief says Jessica's killer could act again

The former head of the FBI in Colorado says several aspects of the Jessica Ridgeway case suggest the killer is still in the area and could possibly act again.

"If the parents can possibly add a little different level of protection right now until this situation is resolved, I think that would be warranted," Bob Pence, the former FBI special agent in charge for Colorado, told 7NEWS Monday.

"Anyone that's capable of an act like this, it may be just the beginning," Pence said. "This person is initiating a sick mind and it's going to involve additional crimes, additional acts that the public needs to be concerned about."

Pence said parents should be protective -- not panicked.

Traditionally, people who commit these types of crimes are cowards and wouldn't approach a child
who's accompanied by an adult or someone else, he said.

He noted that serial killers and abductors normally move quickly through an area, which contradicts the abduction of Jessica, who disappeared while walking to school on Oct. 5. Her backpack was found two days later and her body was found in an Arvada open space area five days after her abduction.

The backpack was found in Superior, six miles from her home and about 6.5 miles from where her body was found.

Pence said leaving the backpack for authorities to find was intentional.

"It's a situation that doesn't always occur in a kidnapping, leaving a clue like that. It was put there for a purpose," he said.

Pence said the killer likely left the backpack either to taunt police or as a diversion...

"We have a very dangerous person on our hands," Pence said. "A person, if they had full mental capacity, probably would not do this. So I think normally that someone capable of doing this has got mental problems and they should be obvious to someone," Pence said....

For the first time in the Jessica Ridgeway murder case, investigators released the description of man who used a chemical-soaked rag in an unsuccessful attempt to abduct a 22-year-old woman near Ketner Lake on May 28.

Police stressed in their announcement on Thursday that are linking the two cases in "an attempt to uncover any lead" in the Jessica Ridgeway's Oct. 5 abduction and subsequent murder and dismemberment.

"Police are trying to determine if there is any connection between the two cases," authorities said in a bulletin to media Thursday afternoon.

Ketner Lake Open Space is only about a half-mile from Jessica's home...

...On May 28 the young woman said she was grabbed by a man described as white or light-skinned and between 18 and 30 years old, with brown hair and a medium build. He was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall.

The woman had initially jogged past the man, police said, then he grabbed her from behind "trying to put a rag over her mouth. She said the rag had a chemical smell on it. She was able to get away and called 911 from her cell phone."

Law enforcement has no description of a vehicle related to that case, police aid.

Police have said they had no information connecting Jessica's case to any other previous metro area abduction cases .

Westminster police also are looking at other attempted abductions in the Denver metro area to see whether those suspects could have been involved in Jessica's kidnapping on Oct. 5 , followed by the discovery of her body 11 miles away in an Arvada open space on Oct. 9....

Or maybe because he failed with the adult, he went for an easier target? I don't know. I thought these weirdo's typically had a certain "type" that they go for too so it doesn't make a lot of sense to me either.

I was just thinking about why the perp dismembered Jessica's body. Murderers dismember their victims for a couple of reasons.

Sometimes dismemberment is done to make the body easier to dispose of (i.e., it's easier to dispose of a body in several trash bags than one large one). This doesn't seem to be the case here as her body parts were left in open space.

Other times, dismemberment is done to prevent or delay identification of the body. This is especially effective when the body is disposed of far away from where the person went missing. If LE finds a body with no hands or head and there's no dna match to any local missing people, identification is very difficult.

But in this case, a dismembered body of a young child was found close to where she disappeared. Even though it took several days for the DNA results to confirm that it was Jessica, I don't think LE had any doubt it was her.

Sometimes killers keep body parts for souvenirs, but they usually take one piece and don't hack up the rest of the body.

A killer might want to remove body parts that might contain evidence linking the crime back to him (hands because of evidence under fingernails, etc.)

Why did the killer leave Jessica's backpack and body parts where they could be found so readily? If he disposed of Jessica deep in the woods or in water, it might have been months, if ever, before she was found.

It seems to me that this guy wanted to have the backpack and Jessica found, and is really getting off on the news coverage of it.

A cross recovered during the Jessica Ridgeway investigation could become a pivotal piece of evidence that helps authorities identify and locate Jessica's killer, our sister station, KMGH, reports....

...Police recovered a wooden cross that is approximately 1 ½ inches tall by 1 inch wide. The cross has a hole drilled through the upper part and appears that it can be or was worn on a necklace. On one side of the cross are three vertical bars etched onto the shorter horizontal section and a zig-zag pattern is carved onto the opposite side. The cross appears to be a solid piece of wood and the upper post portion is offset from the lower post below the short horizontal section.

Authorities are looking for someone who may carry or wear this type of cross, may have recently purchased one of these, or is known to have some association with one. Police are also looking for a local business that may sell these specific crosses. ...

Sunday afternoon, about a mile from where Jessica Ridgeway’s remains were found, someone walking in a field made an unsettling discovery.

Police closed the field off in crime-scene tape and performed a grid search removing bags of evidence.

A source familiar with the investigation said the person discovered a clump of blond hair which investigators believe may be Jessica Ridgeway’s.

Fox 31 Denver has learned new details about the Ridgeway murder investigation showing investigators are making progress in finding her killer.

In the days after she vanished, investigators asked the public to stop looking at what the 10-year-old girl was wearing when she vanished, and pay more particular attention to her facial features.....

Sources say the reason police asked the public to change their focus is because when they found Ridgeway’s book bag after her disappearance, her clothes were inside. A source said only her socks were missing.

The book bag and Ridgeway’s remains are the two connections police may have to a possible suspect.

Two separate sources familiar with the investigation told Fox 31 Denver’s Justin Joseph, during the investigation into those two items, they recovered a man’s DNA.

Sources say police matched that DNA to the DNA police recovered during another recent attempted sex assault on an adult female. ...

The link suggests the killer’s behavior may be escalating targeting both women and children.

The DNA link also explains why police have gone door-to-door in Jessica’s neighborhood collecting DNA samples....

Police confirmed a definitive connection between the attempted abduction of an adult jogger on Memorial Day near Ketner Lake and the murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

However Westminster police investigator Trevor Materasso would not say what that link is.

"Police need to preserve the integrity of the investigation as much as possible," he said Monday afternoon.

Westminster police held a meeting with television news directors Monday afternoon to ask them to use more discretion about the details being reported about the case.

On Sunday night, Fox 31 reported elements of the case, attributed to unnamed sources, that Materasso told The Denver Post contained "bad information."

"We are confident in the accuracy of our story and stand by it 100 percent," Fox 31's Vice President of News Ed Kosowski said.

One part of the report said a grocery store receipt for garbage bags was found in Pattridge Park Open Space in Arvada, near where Jessica's body was found Oct. 10. Materasso said no receipts were found in that area or at Ketner Lake Open Space, near Jessica's Westminster home. He said employees at a King Soopers store have been interviewed, but "what led us to talk to them was related to a different tip."

He would not talk about forensic elements of the case, including the results of tests of DNA samples. Nor would he discuss anything about Jessica's backpack, which was discovered in the Superior neighborhood of Rock Creek three days after she disappeared.

He did say what was described as hair by a person walking in a field about a mile from where Jessica's remains were found in Pattridge Park had been collected.

"We are asking people to understand that some of this needs to be withheld," Materasso said....

Last week, police renewed their calls for tips from people who might have information related to the Memorial Day attempted abduction of a jogger on Ketner Lake Open Space. That woman told police that a man attempted to cover her face with a chemical-soaked rag. She was able to escape.

She described her attacker as an 18 to 30 year-old light-skinned male with brown hair and a medium build, about 5-feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall....

That cross that LE released the picture of has something to do with linking the the attempted abduction and Jessica's abduction and murder.
This guy is dangerous, he goes from trying to attacked an adult female to kidnapping a young girl, makes me think anybody could be next, young or old, I wonder what the profiler's would say.

It makes me so sad to think what Jessica would have went through, I have no doubt she was assaulted, his previous attempt on a grown lady didn't work, so why not try a young girl, easier to get and overpower her.

I really hope they have some solid clues on who this person is and get him soon

I agree that Jessica was almost certainly raped. Poor child.

I think this guy's dangerous not only because of his choice of victims, but because he left both Jessica's backpack and remains where they could easily be found. Why didn't he dispose of them out of town? Is he taunting the police? Or did he have to stay close because his circumstances prevent him from being gone for hours at a time without explanation (e.g., he's married)?

We know the perp's DNA isn't in the state or federal dna database because they've had the DNA since the May attack and don't have a suspect from it.

What is known about the perp: "...On May 28 the young woman said she was grabbed by a man described as white or light-skinned and between 18 and 30 years old, with brown hair and a medium build. He was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall." So that narrows it down somewhat.

Arrest made in Jessica Ridgeway case, police say

Westminster, Colo., police said they have made an arrest in the Jessica Ridgeway case.

.Ridgeway disappeared Oct. 5 on her way to school. Her body was found a few days later.

Austin Reed Sigg was arrested late Tuesday night after police received a tip that led them to a home near Ketner Lake Open Space, according to a news release from the Westminster Police Department.
The Associated Press has reported that Sigg's mother turned him in. - seems another mum had suspicions of her son
Authorities also said that charges will be filed against Sigg for the May 28 attempted abduction of an adult jogger near Ketner Lake, which authorities confirmed earlier this week was connected to Jessica's kidnapping and murder.
Sigg will be charged with two counts of murder in the first degree and a second-degree kidnapping charge, among others.
According to police documents, Sigg is a student at Arapahoe Community College. On March 23, he won second place in the Crime Scene Investigation division of the Health Occupation Students of America State Leadership Conference competition.
According to arrest documents, Sigg lives about a block west of Ketner Lake Open Space and about 1½ miles south of where Jessica Ridgeway was snatched from the street as she walked to school the morning of Oct. 5.
Police are blocking access to Sigg's home.
