The rational conclusion is that neither candidate is acceptable. It's not arguable given what's known about them. Partisans don't care because they aren't rational when it comes to politics. I don't think the average person has a clue as to what rationality and logic really are. "Rationality" means doing what you're been conditioned/socialized to do. What's normalized in a society is what's rational. In a polarized society you have two competing variants of normalcy, the adherents of which have been conditioned to view each other as the enemy. For them, politics consists entirely of supporting their party by opposing the other party, which is a texbook example of a vicious cycle. It ultimately goes nowhere. It's only function is to deplete the energy of the American electorate, while the foxes take care of business in the "henhouse". Ask a partisan why they participate in this madness and they'll tell you it's democracy.

all politicians are down with cooking the books, with the possible exception of Jimmy Carter, who I have a lot of respect for.

As for accurate stats, I used to go to shadowstats.com, which was a legit legit source for estimating things like inflation, GDP, unemployment, M3 after the Federal Reserve stopped publishing M3 date, which happened in 2008, I believe. No surprise there, given what was done after the housing market collapsed from being looted.

As for unemployment figures, people who give up looking for jobs are excluded, similar to how inflation figures are manipulated.

At this point in time the most reliable way to gauge the state of the economy from the perspective of ordinary people is to look for local data re homelessness. As best I can tell it's exploding, which tells me we're in a depression.
