NASHUA NH– A stolen $12 steak could land a woman seven years in prison, police said.

The theft of the rib eye steak from Market Basket supermarket Monday night is the third theft-related crime for 43-year-old Maria Dacosta, police said Tuesday.

Dacosta, of 97 Palm St., Apt. 1, was caught by employees leaving the 375 Amherst St. store with an unpaid steak in her purse, police Lt. George McCarthy said.

“It was a very expensive steak if you’re going to prison,” he said.

Police intended to charge her with misdemeanor theft by unauthorized taking, McCarthy said. But the charge was upgraded to a class B felony when a review of Dacosta’s criminal history revealed two prior convictions for theft, he said. McCarthy didn’t know the details of the two convictions.
The felony crime is punishable by up to seven years imprisonment.
