Same sex marriage is recognized in a lot of countries and more and more are on the verge, same as with the states here. I think it's a good thing.

Dick had strong opinions (I think he was honest about those) and he liked to banter. He got me thinking about some things in a different way. Mostly, when we disagreed, giving open-minded consideration to his viewpoint ultimately confirmed for me that I was right all along.

I like Dick. He made me laugh. Mixing it up with people who can make me think and laugh sometimes - that's my attraction to Mock.

If his sister is a lesbian is there any chance the Aussie PM will change his view on gay marriage? I can remember an American politician years ago, Republican I think, who did a 180 degree turn on the subject of gay rights and became suddenly for gay rights when his daughter came out as a lesbian.

Same as the kid of another American politician, can't remember who, who was dead against stem cell research until it became clear that stem cell research might one day cure or slow down an illness their father was terminally ill with.

A case of “what! It might save my dying father?....after careful consideration I have decided I am now FOR stem cell research!”

Well, from memory (because I'm no fan of the guy), in his earlier days he was out blowing the radical Christian trumpet about how a marriage should be as described in the good book and that it was unnatural to have a same sex union blah blah... I'm happy to be corrected, but I also recall him being somewhat estranged from his sister at this time.

Fast forward a few years to just before election time, and magically he and his sister had kissed and made up and his stance has changed. He wouldn't come out in any kind of support of same sex marriage, or couples per se for that fact, but promoted a more neutral position, in the sense of you believe what works for you, and I'll believe what works for me kind of fashion.

Its funny how certain people can be dead against something then do a complete fucking U turn when it affects them directly.

Saw the news earlier - your hunch was right - the state's recognition of gay marriage wasn't all said and done. It was over-ridden by Australia's High Court today.

The judges found the ACT laws could not operate alongside federal laws as only the federal parliament had the power under the constitution to legislate on same sex marriage.

They said the Marriage Act did not allow or recognise marriages between same sex couples.

The court held the ACT Act provided for marriage equality for same sex couples.

Not, as the territory argued, for a form of legally recognised relationship which was different from marriage.

The finding means ACT Act cannot operate concurrently with the federal Act.

"Because the ACT Act does not validly provide for the formation of same sex marriages, its provisions about the rights of parties to such marriages and the dissolution of such marriages cannot have separate operation and are also of no effect," the statement said.

Similar issues as those decided by the US Supreme Court earlier this year.

The SC Justices essentially repealed DOMA, the federal law defining marriage as a man and a woman. It's entirely up to each state to decide whether or not to recognize same sex marriage. For those states that do recognize it, gay married couples are now entitled to the same federal benefits afforded heterosexual married couples. It was a hard-won victory after two decades of battles by LGBT advocates here.

It'll be interesting to see what steps advocates for gay equality take next in Australia.
