I wonder when Texas will allow same sex marriages..

I think it's great gay couples are finally getting the right to be able to get married in most states now.

It used to be if one of the partners passed away the other would sometimes have no right to their deceased counterpart's stuff. The family of the dead person would be allowed to take what rightfully belonged to the living partner.

Not saying that's the only reason same sex couples get hitched. But it's a perk.

Not only stuff. Medical decisions, end of life care, funeral and burial decisions were often decided by parents or siblings of the ill/deceased partner with the living partner having no legal say.

This may come as a huge surprise but interracial marriage used to be illegal too. I know...whack, right? Smiley_emoticons_slash
Social Security Benefits for LGBT Surviving Spouses

President Barack Obama's budget for fiscal year 2016 includes a major change for legally married same-sex couples, making them eligible to receive Social Security spousal benefits regardless of where they live. Currently, these couples are unable to get such benefits if they live in a state that does not recognize gay marriage.

"This means that for a couple that marries in one state where same-sex marriage is recognized and then moves to another state where it is not, the protection that Social Security spousal benefits provides to families is unavailable," says the budget proposal, which was released Monday. "Under the (new) proposal, such married couples would have access to these benefits."

This proposed change to the Social Security Act was welcome news for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocates, who have been pushing for equal benefits.

Obama's budget will need to be approved by the Republican-controlled Congress. I think he's gonna have a hard time pushing through equal SS benefits for gay widows and widowers nationwide, but I hope he succeeds.

And welcome news for conspiracy theorists waiting for Social Security to run out.
SUPREME COURT ADDRESSES MARRIAGE EQUALITY

It's a big day for same-sex marriage advocates and opponents.

The Supreme Court justices are meeting today to offer the first public indication of where they stand in the dispute over whether states can continue defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman, and whether the Constitution gives gay and lesbian couples the right to marry anywhere in the country.

The court is hearing extended arguments, scheduled to last 2 ½ hours, which also will explore whether states that do not permit same-sex marriage must nonetheless recognize such unions from elsewhere. Currently, for example, a gay couple married in Oregon won't be recognized as married if they move to Kentucky where the state constitution bans gay marriage.

People on both sides of the issue gathered outside the marble courthouse this morning to protest bans, advocate for legalization, advocate for states' rights to decide, protest gay marriage, etc...

The Supreme Court is addressing suits from couples in four of the 14 states that still ban gay marriage. It's expected that if the court decides in favor of the plaintiffs, it will eradicate any further attempts the other 10 states may make to continue their bans on same-sex marriage, and gay couples will be able to legally marry throughout the U.S.

The briefs by the plaintiffs are said to read much like those that resulted in the end of interracial marriage bans in 1967. The final ruling is expected by June.

I hope they do the right thing. I think gays are entitled to that just as much as I am.

Working Gay people pay into SS, so they are not draining the SS fund, much like the SS collecting dregs that never paid a cent into the SS coffers!

I agree. I believe Lyndon Johnson gave the dregs that ability.

Exactly.

Can't believe I have never posted here....but my thoughts on this subject is simple, really, i.e, equal rights for all citizens....I am at a loss to understand why there are people out there than want to ban marriage between same sex....my goodness, I don't understand why so many straights are threatened by this...
You know, live and let live, as we used to say in the 50's. Our sexual orientation should not define us as a person.....It is secondary as to our character as a person...Amen

Yesterday's high-profile Supreme Court hearing on same-sex marriage was briefly interrupted by a protestor screaming about gay people going to hell.

About half an hour into oral arguments, the man, who was sitting in the audience, suddenly jumped up and started shouting his views.

"If you support gay marriage, you will burn in hell!" the man shouted as he was dragged out of the room. "Homosexuality is an abomination!"

More and more people of influence are "coming out" in support of Gay Marriage!

Who is next?

When John Kerry said he was going to get behind me, I said, "How close"?

He asked how I managed to stay on my bike. I showed him.

Gay Marriage Zero, not Fail Marriage.
Gay Equality in Ireland

Yesterday the people of Ireland voted in favor of marriage equality and legalized same-sex marriage across the country.

Also, last week, an Irish civil court judge found Ashers Bakery guilty of discrimination for refusing to supply a cake advocating the legalization of gay marriage. The bakery owners told the court that they were against gay marriage on religious grounds but the judge ruled in favor of the gay male activist. The bakery owners said they'll pay the settlement (about $750 USD) and simply stop supplying anything other than birthday and special event cakes.

The bakery owners argued that they should be able to respect their religious beliefs in the course of doing business; they had a lot of public support. But, in her ruling, Belfast Judge Isobel Brownlie called the bakery's cancellation of the order "direct discrimination for which there can be no justifica, ion." The judge said the bakery was a business, not a religious organization, and therefore had no legal basis to reject an order based on a customer's sexual orientation or beliefs.

This is great news. When I was a teen my gay sibling took such grief from our parents and his classmates that he attempted suicide. He went through electroshock in attempts to accommodate our parents and society's expectations at 16 years old. When it proved to be unsuccessful our parents kicked him out of the house and told him to never return. I remember clearly the hateful words used to belittle him in pejorative tones. I never thought the world could change so much in 50 years.
