Gun advocates would argue that the gun wouldn't have done the guy any good (in the case of a home invasion) if it were locked up in a safe. I don't like guns or want to own one but I kind of get that mentality from responsible gun owners. HOWEVER, not only was that gun out, it was loaded and, if it had a safety, it must have been off. That's royally fucked up and irresponsible as far as I'm concerned.
Lock it in a safe next to your bed at all times, if you hear suspicious noises downstairs at night you can easily arm yourself before going to check things out.

Even having the fucking thing in a holster on your belt around the house when you are awake is safer than leaving it lying around like a dirty pair of socks, loaded with the frigging safety off.

If i had left any of my guns lying around my parents house loaded with the safety off my mother would have pistolwhipped in disgust.

Your description of leaving it around like a remote was correct. Hell, putting it on top of the fridge (safety on) would be 100 times better spot.
Children think everything left within their reach is a potential plaything or toy the victims friend should have immediately thought to himself on seeing the kid walk in “oh shit better fucking move you know what!”

But this attitude of its no big deal its just a gun really made him drop the ball big time and his friend paid with his life. And how is the son going to feel when he grows up? Someone I don't think you are going to see him anywhere near a gun shop or gun range when he's an adult.
This is the utmost in irresponsibility.

Drop in visit or not, if you take the responsibility to own firearms you MUST take the responsibility to store them properly. Damn people, this is gun safety 101 shit!

What a disgrace, and what a tragedy.
Darwin's theory has a glitch every now and then it seems; the wrong moron gets whacked.

I wonder if there will be any action brought against the genius that leaves a loaded gun about the house? Is there even an avenue to pursue it?

I don't think there can be any charges filed against the gun owner.

It's not against the law to have legally owned loaded weapons laying around the house, AFAIK. The police interviewed the 4 year old to make sure the friend's story was true and determined there was no foul play involved.

The kid reportedly told police what he did with the gun and still didn't realize that he'd done anything wrong during the interview.

Had the father lived, he may have been charged with child endangerment for not supervising his son. It's very lucky for the little boy's family that he didn't accidentally shoot himself too.

Make it through a tour/s of Iraq and come home in one piece only to be killed by your little boy. It's such a sad story.
He is a victim of his countries gun culture at the end of the day. Things like that just do not happen in the UK.

I agree. Cases like this just don't happen, or a extremely extremely rare, here also. I put the rare part in because I do remember two kids about ten years ago or so that found their way into one of the kids father's gun safe. He was subsequently charged iirc.

This a bit of a humorous video that got a bit of air time over here when the gun reform legislation was squashed. It'd be even funnier if there wasn't so much truth in it..

If I posted it before, bite me..

Ha ha! Whoop dee fucking doo!

Absolutely brilliant when the gun nut says “we have more guns in America therefore we are bound to have more gun crime” THAT'S PRECISELY WHY SOME PEOPLE WANT GUN CONTROL YOU FUCKING MONG!

Here we have a leading gun nut admitting on camera that the more guns there are the more gun crime there will be a point I have been making here for five years.

The United States will never see the kind of gun control that other countries have. I have very little doubt that it would lead to some kind of civil unrest if they tried.
Which in turn would be another huge dose if irony, wouldn't it? Resorting to violence with guns to prove that gun reform won't lessen gun violence...

Adit: and yes, I know you said 'some kind of' not specifically gun related, but it's no real stretch of the imagination to see it getting there very quickly

I wouldn't have nitpicked, I understand what you mean.
I hate it when the interviewer suggests a ONE HOUR waiting period when buying a gun and the baldy gun nut moron holds his stupid little 2nd amendment stop sign up, i mean really? How fucking pig headed and stubborn is that? You aren't even prepared to wait an hour before purchasing a deadly weapon?
A one hour waiting period? Absurd.
I sometimes wait more than an hour for a chinese takeaway to arrive and my king prawn chow mein is a lot less likely to be used in a gun massacre than a gun.
The waiting periods are bullshit to start with. They were based on the premise that some guy back in the 70's went and legally bought a gun then immediately killed someone with it. The waiting period was a "Cooling Off" period. The crimes it was designed to prevent were something under 1% of the total gun crimes. The anti gun nuts get all foaming at the mouth about them, ridiculous waste of time and effort.
This guy was killed because some irresponsible adult didn't secure his weapons and had a surprise visitor. Waiting periods will not stop that sort of thing. Its sad, but I don't see any reason at all for ME or anyone I know to have to deal with any more laws to deal with it. People here in this country are accidentally killed with guns at about the same rate as accidentally run over by their own family and yet, no one is proposing a waiting period to buy a car.
If you want t make a difference, enforce the laws we have already, hunt down the assholes on the street and check them for weapons, stop letting them out of prison.
Comparing cars to guns really is a completely fucking braindead concept with so many holes in it it would sink before it got three feet from the shoreline.
A cars primary use and purpose is as a mode of transport not a murder weapon, a guns sole and only purpose is to kill someone. In fact guns were redesigned and reinvented in the US solely for the purpose of killing as many bush niggers as possible as efficiently and effectively as possible without having to trouble yourself with reloading.
Gun nuts go on about the second amendment till they are blue in the face, when was the 2nd amendment signed into the constitution? 1776? Ok here's the deal if you want the right to bear arms agreed upon over 300 years ago then you can only buy and own the firearms that were available 300 years ago, muzzle loaded single shot flintlock muskets. America didn't fight the king of England with AK47s.
