Fride says he used to be a pacifist, but after evaluating what Jesus would do in the modern world of crime, he now believes all citizens should arm themselves.
When a church member told him she was uncomfortable with guns, he asked her, "how do you feel about rape?"
While his superiors disagree with his pro-gun stance, the story doesn't indicate that any disciplinary action has been taken against Fride.
I think he gave them good advice & I hope that those who pay attention to it are properly trained.
Well if he is hosting gun safety and conceal carry classes at the parish hall that's a good start to being properly trained.
My guess is he is in the minority of priests or religious who would advocate that Jesus would've been a pistol packing preacher.
I hope anyone who took the pastor's advice is well-trained too Duchess.
But, just like I think stable people who want to own guns have the right to do so (responsibly), I don't think stable people who feel uncomfortable with guns should be pushed or scared into arming themselves.
An unarmed person might be in a situation to defend herself or others and wish she had a gun, that's true. But, as we see over and over, an armed person might never need lethal force for defense and end up regretting that her gun was accidentally or negligently fired, causing herself or one of her loved ones to be hurt or killed.

I agree with that. I don't like seeing people motivated by fear and I don't like seeing people scared needlessly.

My recollection from bible school was that Jesus only got really pissed off once; in a marketplace. Instead of turning over a bunch of tables, he probably would have committed mass murder--shot the place up.

They also ran checks on all the teacher to make sure none of them had concealed weapons permits, should they decide to fight back.
The two masked 'intruders' stormed a room where several teachers had gathered.

Edward Fride, a reportedly popular and beloved pastor at Christ the King church in Ann Arbor, has told parishioners to carry guns.
He has essentially told churchgoers that Jesus would defend his loved ones and others from evil-doers by lethal means, if necessary.
He sent them a letter informing them that since they were not in Mayberry anymore, they needed to learn to defend themselves and should take a Concealed Carry License class which he was sponsoring.
Fride told parishioners in the letter that Catholic teachings do not preclude carrying a gun for self-defense and to defend others. Fride then asserted that crime is up and that because of budget cuts, "there has been a significant reduction in the availability of an armed police response."
Michael Diebold, a spokesman for the Diocese of Lansing which oversees the Ann Arbor parish, confirmed Monday that the controversial letter had been sent.
"Yes, it appears that 'We're Not in Mayberry Anymore, Toto!' was sent out to the parishioners of Christ the King by their pastor, Fr. Ed Fride," Diebold wrote in an email to the Free Press.
Guns and gun lessons do not belong in a Catholic church, Lansing Catholic Bishop Earl Boyea stressed in a statement after they learned about Fride's letter from the Free Press.
"Additionally, Bishop Boyea further states that Concealed Pistol License classes are inappropriate activities to be held on Church property," wrote Diebold.

In Phoenix, a 2-year-old grabbed a gun while being baby sat by his aunt and grandmother and shot himself in the face. Part of his skull has been removed to relieve the swelling; he's in critical condition. An investigation is underway. No charges have been filed. Ref:

Instead of all the headlines re shaming of a 5 year old kindergarten student having to cover herself with shirt and pants after wearing a sundress to school (spaghetti straps are dangerous according to school as boys can untie them, thus exposing chest of little girl), these assholes should be shamed by having their names, pictures and asinine actions plastered all over the news media with label of stupid politician and/or citizen. Our priorities are messed up...sundresses on a 5 year old is not going to kill anyone, but that gets more of a headline that an irresponsible person handling a weapon and that is exactly why we have to cut off the head of the NRA....it is all about money to them and they have disgraced the original intent of this organization. Like I have said over and over, there are just too many stupid, careless, irresponsible, idiots out there who should never own any type of weapon.

I feel the same way about all of the parents/adults who are so moronic as to leave guns in reach of kids. At bare minimum, they should lose gun owning privileges.
Here's another case of negligent dipshit parenting (IMO) where no charges are expected to be filed. Luckily, the one-year-old shooting victim is expected to survive.
Deputies said the two siblings were left along in a car around 4:30 p.m. outside the Sonshine Learning Center, located at 351 Orange Road in South Venice, Floriida.
The 3-year-old got a hold of a loaded gun in the car and shot the 1-year-old in the face. The 1-year-old was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital.
Deputies are working to find out where the parents were at the time of the shooting and where the gun was located inside the car. They said no charges are expected to be filed against the parents at this time.

Do you understand why not? I rarely do and I don't know why it isn't as simple to those in charge as it is to me. I don't believe that this type of thing happens without someone being irresponsible with their gun and they need to pay consequences for that.

Political repercussions for elected judges and prosecutors, gun lobbyists using political leverage to block enforceable gun safety laws, and because there is no criminal intent involved in an "accident" - even a preventable one. IMO.
I have seen some charges filed against parents in cases where their gun was used by a child - typically the charges fell under a "child neglect" statute. But, it's difficult to get a conviction unless there's proof that the child was neglected or harmed by the parents in other routine ways like malnourishment, physical abuse, etc... It's very frustrating.

That's disheartening to say the least. It makes me feel sad & mad at the same time. People are dying and in some cases it's being chalked up to "well, there was no intent" or "negligence can't be proven". In my opinion, the death is the proof.

^ Roy Murry earned a Bronze Star for valor as an Army National Guard sergeant in Iraq, where he was severely injured by a bomb. He has had a series of run-ins involving weapons with law enforcement officers since his return from the war.
Murry remained in custody after surrendering to authorities on Saturday, four days after the home of his wife's family was set on fire near Colbert, Spokane, Washington County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said.
The three bodies were found with numerous gunshot wounds on the rural property.
He was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday in Spokane County Superior Court after his arrest on three counts of first-degree murder.
In 2011, the Spokane County Republican Party named Murry as one of three nominees to fill a state Senate seat, despite his lack of political experience and a brush with the law.
Criminal History
A year earlier, he had forfeited bail on a charge of possessing an illegal switchblade knife.
Just days after Murry was nominated as a candidate for the Senate post, he was arrested in Las Vegas on a firearms charge.
Police said his car was parked on the side of a road at a strange angle with its motor running. Police found a semi-automatic handgun in his waistband. He also had two knives, two ammunition clips and some loose rounds in his pocket.
Later in 2011, Murry was arrested after he carried a loaded gun into a veterans hospital in Walla Walla.
A federal grand jury indicted Murry on misdemeanor charges of possession of a firearm in a federal facility and possession of a dangerous weapon in a federal facility.
Court records indicate that he entered a diversion program in which he agreed to perform 100 hours of community service, pay $500, relinquish any permit that allowed him to carry concealed weapons for two years, and complete a firearms safety course.
