I sacrifice food for alcohol on the days I want to drink. It seems to be working although I think I might be slighty malnourished because I passed out in CVS today.

Unless the reason you stopped is no longer a concern, I hear there are good non-alcoholic beers out there now if you just crave the taste. I've never had one; kinda like decaffeinated coffee to me. No real point, but I drink for the buzz as much as the taste.

I stopped to improve my long term health. I don't love beer enough to drink NA for the taste.

This short article sums up the causes of the CA cities' bankruptcy filings. Essentially, shortfalls in property taxes and sales taxes, some allegations of accounting mismanagement, and rising cost in city pension payouts. The cities, according to the article, could not pay their employees and vendors. The article doesn't address the impacts (if any) on the people living in these towns.

I do think it's interesting timing that the ballot approved by voters in 2008 for the rail system project was finally approved by state legislators shortly after Stockton's bankruptcy filing. Both Brown and Obama support the project, which is estimated to cost $68.1 billion, with 60% coming from federal funding.

Those legislators that oppose the project worry that there is no guarantee of future funding beyond segment 1 of the project; a very legitimate concern, imo.

On a personal level, I love the idea of getting from SF to LA on high speed rail, big time. BUT, if this project gets off the ground and then goes back into dormancy for years and years, it will be a huge waste, imo.

Not sure about the order/priority of the rail projects, Jimbone. I'd need to check.

It would be nice to have such a rail system. When I lived in Japan and worked for weeks at a time in other countries, I used only slow train or highspeed rail. It was great. But, I think you're right about the feasibility of my riding high speed rail from SF to LA anytime before I qualify for senior discount fare (if ever).

I think one of the strings to the federal money was Harry Reid's pet project of the train going to Vegas... as if anyone is going to drive to Victorville to hop on a train. They'll just catch a flight out of LAX and be there faster.
