I think they feel the need to pre-plan the food because the truth is the drinks start flowing before noon and don't ever stop. We'd probably die of alcohol poisoning if they didn't figure out meals in advance. Meh, I don't really like drinking during the day unless I plan to go to bed at 5:00pm.
